Program Notes
Sibelius composed several works for torviseitsikko, a specifically Finnish instrumental combination consisting of E flat soprano cornet, two B flat cornets, E flat alt horn, B flat tenor horn, B flat euphonium, E flat bass and percussion. The torviseitsikko soon developed its own unique repertoire and gained widespread popularity. The town of Lovisa’s volunteer fire brigade had an active torviseitsikko and it was almost certainly for this ensemble (directed by the German-born Christian Haupt, a friend of Sibelius’s) that Sibelius composed the Overture in F minor (1889), his longest and most thoroughly worked-out work for brass ensemble.
After an imposing Lento introduction Sibelius delights in writing sparkling, witty and often agile themes.
