Few buildings in Stockholm carry as much history as the Grand Hôtel. Perched on the waterfront at Södra Blasieholmshamnen, directly across from the Royal Palace, it has stood as the city’s most celebrated address since 1874—welcoming Nobel laureates, royalty, film stars, and discerning travelers from around the world.
Founded by French chef Régis Cadier, the Grand was Stockholm’s first hotel built to the standard of the grand continental establishments of Europe. More than 150 years later, it still is.

Perched on the waterfront at Södra Blasieholmshamnen, the Grand Hôtel shares its prime location with other notable waterfront hotels in Stockholm.
A Hotel Written Into Swedish History
The Grand Hôtel’s story begins in 1874, when Régis Cadier set out to create something Stockholm had never seen—a world-class hotel that matched the finest addresses in Paris and Vienna. He succeeded. Within decades, the hotel had become not just a place to stay but a stage for the city’s most defining moments.
The first Nobel Prize banquet was held here in 1901. For nearly three decades, the Grand’s Spegelsalen (Hall of Mirrors) hosted the laureates until the event outgrew the space and moved to Stockholm City Hall in 1929. The tradition lives on: Nobel Prize winners and their families still stay at the hotel each December, woken on the 13th to coffee, saffron buns, and the sound of a Lucia choir.
In 1909, the Grand Hôtel Royal wing opened, featuring the breathtaking Vinterträdgården (Winter Garden)—a lush, glass-roofed oasis that became the social heart of the hotel. By the 1930s, when jazz swept through Stockholm, the Royal had transformed into the city’s most glamorous dance venue, with guests in tails and evening gowns moving to the Thore Ehrling orchestra.
Since 1968, the hotel has been owned by the Wallenberg family—one of Sweden’s most prominent dynasties—ensuring it remains a national institution rather than just a luxury brand.
