Terry Bogard (テリー・ボガード, Terry Bogard) is the main protagonist of the Fatal Fury franchise, as well as a major character in its sister series, The King of Fighters. Widely considered one of SNK's most iconic characters.[1] Terry made his Super Smash Bros. series debut in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate as the fourth character of Fighters Pass Vol. 1.
Origin[edit]
An American martial artist known for his charisma and friendliness, Terry fights in a mixed fighting style incorporating elements of boxing, kung fu, kickboxing, and fictional Hakkyokuseiken, created by his master Tung Fu Rue. Originally an orphan, Terry and his younger brother Andy began their journey as martial artists to avenge the murder of their adopted father, Jeff Bogard, at the hands of crime lord Geese Howard. Over time, Terry becomes renowned as a talented fighter who seeks to continue protecting his home of South Town, together with Andy and their mutual friend, fellow martial artist Joe Higashi. Outside of fighting, his hobbies include playing video games and basketball. Terry also has a love interest, "Blue" Mary Ryan, and a pet monkey named Ukee.
Terry debuted in the first Fatal Fury game, where he participates in the "King of Fighters" tournament hosted by Geese. He emerges victorious in the tournament, defeating Geese and sending him falling from the top of the high-rise Geese Tower, assumed dead. Geese is later revealed to have survived; Real Bout Fatal Fury depicts a final showdown with Terry and Geese at the conclusion of a new King of Fighters tournament, where Geese is again thrown from his tower. This time, Terry grabs hold of him before he can fall any further, but in a seeming act of egotism, Geese refuses Terry's help and knocks his hand away, plummeting to what is believed to be his permanent death. Afterwards, Terry meets Geese's now-orphaned son, Rock Howard, and becomes an adoptive father to him, in order to put the feud between him and Geese behind. Garou: Mark of the Wolves, set many years into the future, depicts an older, matured Terry who has mentored Rock into a strong fighter. The final game in the series for many years, he later reappeared oncemore in that game's sequel, Fatal Fury: City of Wolves. Garou debuted a brand new appearance for Terry, and the Buster Wolf move that would become arguably his most iconic of all.
Terry is also a prominent character in Fatal Fury's sister series, The King of Fighters, appearing in every game since the beginning. As the series is set in a separate continuity, liberties are taken regarding the details of events seen in Fatal Fury, but Terry's characterization, fighting style, and personality are overall the same as his home series. In most games, he is the leader of the Fatal Fury Team, with Andy and Joe as his teammates, though he is sometimes accompanied by other Fatal Fury characters in their stead. The larger story of The King of Fighters primarily centres its original cast, and as such, Terry's storylines and endings generally occur either independently of the series's main events, or as only one part of its overall ensemble. In The King of Fighters 2000, Terry has mysteriously gone missing, but reunites with Andy, Joe, and Blue Mary in order to help take down the evil organization NESTS, and his mentorship of Rock is integrated beginning with The King of Fighters 2003.
Outside of both series, Terry's status as a major representative for SNK leads him to make a variety of guest appearances in other media and crossovers, memorably including the Capcom vs. SNK and SNK vs. Capcom series, Street Fighter 6, Fighting EX Layer, and in a sub-dimensional female form in SNK Heroines: Tag Team Frenzy.
In Super Smash Bros. Ultimate[edit]
As a playable character[edit]
Terry appears as a newcomer in Super Smash Bros. Ultimate, with his inclusion being announced during a Nintendo Direct on September 4, 2019.[2] He is the fourth DLC character of Fighters Pass Vol. 1, and was released on November 6th, 2019.[3]
The overwhelming majority of Terry's moveset consists of attacks he has used throughout the Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters series, although his up aerial is unique to Ultimate because of the lack of a reasonably corresponding attack.[4] Like fellow fighting game characters Ryu, Ken and Kazuya, Terry always faces his opponent when one is left standing (teammates counted if Team Attack is on) and several of his normal moves can be canceled into his special moves.[4]
Uniquely, Terry also possesses a number of mechanics from his home series: he has access to a dodge attack, a backward special move (Crack Shoot), and two super special moves (Buster Wolf and Power Geyser).[4] However, his super specials only become usable when his damage percentage reaches 100% (or 30% of his starting HP in Stamina Mode). This is in reference to his home series, where characters can use Desperation Moves when their power gauge is full and they have less than half of their health left.[4]

Trivia[edit]
- Terry is the first fighter to have debuted on the Neo Geo consoles and arcade cabinets.
- Though Terry is voiced exclusively by a Japanese voice actor, he speaks English phrases in all versions of Ultimate. He is the third character with this distinction, following Ness and Captain Falcon.
- Although he is able to crawl in several of his appearances in Fatal Fury and The King of Fighters, Terry is unable to do so in Smash Bros.
- Due to his trailers only using sprite animation, he is one of four characters to not have CGI models, the others being Ryu, Joker and Dr. Mario.
