What happens to EV charging when the summer ends and normal life resumes? 🚗 Many drivers with home chargers rely on the public network mainly for holidays and longer trips. So you might expect the big seasonal swings in en-route charging. Our daily utilisation data shows the other side to this story. 📉 Within days of schools returning, utilisation at accommodation sites fell to around 25% below its August average and stayed around 20% down all month. Leisure sites dropped by around 20%, then slowly recovered. 📈 Education sites went the other way, climbing steadily through September to nearly 45% above their August level. 🔎 So what does that mean in practice? ⚡ Accommodation providers: drivers increasingly factor charging, and its price, into where they choose to stay, without ever directly asking you the question. Visibility counts! ⚡ Could quieter months be an opportunity to promote chargers to local drivers or trial off-peak pricing? ⚡ Schools, colleges and universities: term-time demand is clear. Could partnerships with sports clubs, holiday camps or community groups keep chargers active outside term? ⚡ CPOs and investors: a single annual average hides swings like these. Site selection, revenue forecasts and operational planning need to reflect how each location type is actually used through the year. 📊 Zapmap clients can now access monthly market overview reporting, to accompany our market leading Utilisation data, helping them to identify where the interesting questions are, so they hit the ground running instead of starting from a blank page. 🗺️ Were you one of the many EV drivers who headed down to the South West this summer? What was your charging experience? While Zapmap utilisation data shows the highest peak in charging sessions for the region over the summer, with a drop as the new school year began, when we look at charging infrastructure growth so far in 2026 a few other regions are catching our eye: 💡 Looking at growth across all power-bands (Standard | Standard Plus | Rapid | Ultra-rapid) in the year to date the top three regions are: ⚡South East ⚡North East ⚡East of England 🪫 When we look at Rapid and Ultra-rapid provision, the North East has seen the highest rate of YTD growth (22.6%). 🔋 For Standard and Standard Plus charging, the South East leads the way at 16.9%. 🚗 Northern Ireland has been picking up the pace over past months, and in September showed the highest YTD growth of any region in two power bands: Standard (23%) and Rapid (18%). ❓How's it looking where you are? What are your predictions for the month ahead? With many hubs, retail partnerships and on-street projects going live, the outlook can change very quickly! 👇 Drop us your thoughts in the comments. 📩 This data is taken from Zapmap Insights Locations and Utilisation datasets. 📈 Latest quarterly stats from Zapmap show Ultra-rapids racing ahead as the cost advantage of running an EV hits a record high. Zapmap stats for September show: ⚡Public EV charging infrastructure expanded 9% year-on-year: the charging network reached 124,738 EV chargers across 48,298 en-route, destination and on-street locations by the end of September 2026. ⚡Year-on-year growth for Ultra-rapid chargers (150kW+) climbed to 39.1%, while charging hubs grew by 28% in the same period, with 144 new locations added this year. ⚡As well as new hub openings, Ultra-rapid growth has been driven by expanded provision at existing locations and upgrades to the network from Rapid to Ultra-rapid chargers. ⚡LEVI supported announcements and installations are a continuing theme. With the goal of meeting the needs of drivers without home charging access, on-street EV charger deployment has grown by 13.4% year-on-year and now stands at 41,374 chargers. 🚗 With stats released by the SMMT showing an additional 454,949 BEVs on the roads in 2026 so far, and declining sales for both petrol and diesel cars, provision in Ultra-rapid charging continues to anticipate the needs of the growing number of drivers making the transition to electric. 💷 This month, Zapmap pricing data also shows that the cost differential between EV and petrol / diesel vehicle running costs is at its highest since Zapmap’s tracking began. A typical EV driver doing 20% of their charging on the public network can now expect to save £1,130 in fuel costs and, for the first time, even EV drivers without access to home charging and who are wholly reliant on the public network will often be better off than a driver of a comparative petrol or diesel car. September was deemed the 'key test' for the EV car market, so how did it fare? 💥 Last month was the strongest month on record for registrations of battery electric vehicles, with 99,201 new EVs registered. Latest figures from the Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) show: ⚡ EV registrations up from 72,779 in September 2025, a year-on-year increase of 36.3%. ⚡ BEVs secured a 28.3% market share for the month, compared to 23.3% for the same time last year. ⚡454,947 BEVs registered so far in 2026, taking year-to-date market share to 26.2%. ⚡ 6.6% of cars on the UK's roads are now BEVs; up from 6.3% last month. As the month when number plates change over, September is a key month for new car registrations. This month's record performance comes on the back of a record breaking August and six continuous months of 25% or higher market share. 📣 Zapmap's Annual EV Charging Survey has gone live this week – the ninth year of the UK's biggest study of what public charging is actually like to use. 🏅 It's where our annual network rankings come from, and it's one of the few places driver experience gets put in front of the whole industry. If you charge on the public network, and are not employed by a charge point operator, this is your chance to have your say. 💷 We really value you taking part: it's independent, should take less than 20 minutes, and there's a prize of £100 of charging credit with Zapmap for five participants. 🚗 If you are not eligible to participate (CPO team members, that's you!) you can register your interest below to ensure you get first sight of this year's results and findings.
