IOM leverages partnerships within the United Nations system to implement its Strategic Plan 2024–2028. As a related organization of the United Nations and the coordinator of the United Nations Network on Migration, IOM promotes policy coherence, contributes to advocacy efforts, harnesses resources and fosters innovation to align migration policies with development goals and deliver coordinated and impactful solutions around the world.
Maximizing the potential of partnerships and cooperation within and among United Nations agencies enables IOM to:
Champion policy coherence and coordinated efforts: IOM works to ensure migration policies align with broader development goals, including the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and the Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration. As coordinator and secretariat of the United Nations Network on Migration, IOM aligns strategies across the United Nation system and supports key events like the regional reviews of the Global Compact and the International Migration Review Forum. It also coordinates the Secretary-General’s biennial reports on the implementation of the Global Compact and related United Nations activities and institutional arrangements. These reports, mandated by the UN General Assembly, are critical for advancing global migration priorities.
Shift the narrative and amplify a unified United Nations voice: IOM is committed to changing the narrative on migration, moving away from a security-focused lens to one that emphasizes the potential of migration with a focus on migrants’ needs. Through collaborative United Nations advocacy, particularly via the United Nations Network on Migration, IOM raises awareness, ensures that migration is included in global conversations and builds support for inclusive migration policies.
Harness expertise and resources: United Nations entities play a vital role in advancing IOM’s mission and provide expertise and knowledge. The Migration Multi-Partner Trust Fund contributes to driving joint programmes and delivering system-wide technical assistance to United Nations country teams.
Facilitate operational cooperation and joint programming: With its strong field presence, IOM focuses on bilateral and multilateral direct cooperation at the country level. IOM is a key player in the capacity-building mechanism of the Global Compact, helping United Nations country teams and governments embed migration into national development plans.
Foster exchange and innovation: IOM promotes the exchange of best practices between United Nations entities, at the bilateral level and through platforms like the Migration Network Hub. IOM and its partners work together to develop innovative responses to emerging migration challenges, which improve results and boost efficiency.
