<p>Deploying the epibenthic sledge to sample larvae and juvenile fish and crustaceans in coastal regions of French Guiana (BioCotEs project). The net, with its 500 µm mesh, is combined with a flowmeter to standardise all the samples at the same volume of filtered water (100 m<sup>3</sup>).</p>

Our activities in the West Indies and French Guiana

Ifremer’s activities in the West Indies and French Guiana extend across the French Antilles from its site in Martinique, and along the coast of French Guiana from the base in Cayenne. Work in French Guiana focuses on the sustainable development of local fisheries, reconciling their economic viability with respect for biodiversity. In Martinique, activities involve aquaculture, fisheries, the environment and biodiversity. Ifremer also contributes to research projects linked to specific local issues, such as the impact of the pesticide chlordécone, the disease ciguatera and Sargassum algae in the West Indies, together with international programmes on fishery management.

The teams based overseas develop regional partnerships on themes of common interest or areas of shared study. They also cooperate with laboratories in mainland France.
