The science and technology units are grouped into four scientific departments and the oceanographic fleet division. The science division is responsible for interdepartmental coordination between these units. It also coordinates the definition of the Institute’s overall direction of travel. The science division, the departments and the oceanographic fleet division define and implement Ifremer’s science and technology strategy.

The science division is responsible for doctoral policy, incentive mechanisms, Ifremer’s involvement in major national programmes and relationships with research agencies and organisations and with universities and engineering schools. Working with the European and international affairs department, it is also responsible for international scientific partnerships. The scientific and technical information service – La Pérouse library is also attached to the science division.

The Expert public policy support division is responsible, under the direction of the Director General, for overseeing various scientific monitoring and expert assessment activities. These activities, whether one-time or recurring, are carried out in collaboration with central government agencies or decentralized state services, as well as with water agencies, the French Biodiversity Office, the European Commission, and local and regional governments.

The innovation partnership and transfer division is responsible for all Ifremer’s relations with the business world. These relations can take a variety of forms: research contracts, hosting young companies, support for start-ups and the development of businesses collaborating with Ifremer. It also provides early-stage brainstorming and incubation for ocean-based solutions.

The French oceanographic fleet division is responsible for the annual scheduling of this extremely large research facility, which is open to the whole French scientific community. It is also responsible for developing the renewal policy for vessels and oceanographic equipment in the context of the ecological and energy transition in the maritime sector. It develops underwater vehicles and scientific instruments for its vessels and vehicles.
