    HIGHS
  • Serious acceleration, tons of standard features, pliant suspension.
  • LOWS
  • Looks don't match the performance, so-so range, an AMG needs more drama.
  • VERDICT
  • While a strong performer on paper, the AMG EQE doesn't excite us like the gas-powered E63 sedan does.

Overview

The AMG-tuned EQE electric sedan doesn't look much different from its tamer Benz-branded brethren, but it is a great deal quicker. Its electric motors put out 617 horsepower most of the time, but activating the car's Race Start launch-control mode provides a brief boost to 677 horses. The EQE53's soft, rounded body lines don't exactly scream performance, though it can reach 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds—acceleration that proves merely average in the electric performance sedan segment. A short-ish range holds it back some, although we were pleased to discover that the most powerful EQE beat its EPA rating in our highway fuel-economy test. Its futuristic, comfortable interior is sufficiently tech-laden, with the standard full-width Hyperscreen dominating the cabin. The Tesla Model S is an obvious bogey that wins on numbers but can't match the EQE's high levels of luxury. A more apt competitor is the comfortable, high-performing Lucid Air, while the Audi e-Tron GT, BMW i5, and Porsche Taycan err toward more conventional design languages.

What's New for 2025?

The EQE53 enters its third model year with a few minor changes. Mercedes says the battery has been updated with new cells that extend the driving range, but the EPA estimates that the 2025 EQE53 should be good for 220 miles of driving range—10 miles below the 2024 model. We'll update this story once we sort that discrepancy out. The EQE's regenerative braking system has been tweaked, too. A new center airbag between the two front seats is standard, and Moonlight White Metallic exterior paint has been added to the options list.

    Compare Cars

    EV Motor, Power, and Performance

The EQE53 has AMG-specific electric motors in the front and rear that provide all-wheel drive. They pump out significantly more grunt than the standard Benz-branded EQE model, with 617 horsepower on tap in the base configuration and 677 horsepower available with Race Start active. Handling is precise thanks to a standard rear-wheel-steering system, and the air suspension never firms up to the point of discomfort, rounding off sharp impacts easily and keeping the cabin well isolated from the road.

    0–60-MPH Times

At our test track, the EQE53 rocketed to 60 mph in just 2.8 seconds.

      Range, Charging, and Battery Life

The EQE53 has the same 90.6-kWh battery pack as the standard Benz model, and its higher performance diminishes range a bit. The EPA says the 2025 EQE53 should be good for 220 miles of driving per charge, but considering a 2023 model went 230 miles on our 75-mph highway fuel-economy test route, we imagine a test with the updated EQE could also beat federal estimates. DC fast-charging capability up to 170 kW is standard.

      Fuel Economy and Real-World MPGe

The EQE53 is rated for 69 MPGe city and 71 MPGe highway, which is less efficient than the larger and heavier EQS53. On our 75-mph highway fuel-economy route, we recorded 77 MPGe. For more information about the EQE53's fuel economy, visit the EPA's website.

      Interior, Comfort, and Cargo

The AMG EQE offers the same interior package as the standard model with a few twists. The seats are unique to the AMG version and there are various performance displays added to the information screens. Because EV powertrains are quiet, the EQE offers several fake sounds available to increase the auditory drama both inside and outside the car. Unfortunately, they're all cringeworthy and have us missing the low burble of the brand's V-8 engines.

        Infotainment and Connectivity

The EQE's standard infotainment setup is Mercedes's Hyperscreen, a multi-part display spanning the entire dash. The glossy black panel houses a digital gauge display, a central touchscreen for infotainment, and another for the front-seat passenger. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard, as are an in-dash navigation system and a Burmester stereo system.

          Safety and Driver-Assistance Features

The EQE53 comes standard with a Driver Assistance package that includes things like adaptive cruise control and the company's Pre-Safe Plus system. For more information about the EQE's crash-test results, visit the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) websites. Key safety features include:

          • Standard automated emergency braking with pedestrian detection
          • Standard lane-departure warning with lane-keeping assist
          • Standard adaptive cruise control with a lane-centering feature

          Warranty and Maintenance Coverage

Mercedes's limited and powertrain warranties are competitive with other German automakers', but its terms aren't particularly noteworthy. There's also no complimentary maintenance, which is something BMW offers.

          • Limited warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
          • Powertrain warranty covers four years or 50,000 miles
          • Battery components are covered for 10 years or 155,000 miles
          • No complimentary scheduled maintenance
