Mega Cat Studios

From the Audiovisual Identity Database, the motion graphics museum

Mega Cat Studios is a game development studio founded in 2015 that is based in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The company focuses on developing and publishing indie homebrew titles for the NES, Super NES, and Genesis, but has also been involved with developing or porting games to newer platforms as well, including remasters of Humongous Entertainment's Backyard Sports franchise.

1st Logo (February 24, 2017-September 14, 2023?)

Visuals: A monochromatic image of a cat's head is shown, wearing goggles in the shape of a Super Nintendo controller and having a cartridge for the aforementioned system worn on a chain necklace. The logo is also colored with orange highlights, as well as the goggles and necklace being fully colored orange. Below the cat is the stacked text "MEGA CAT STUDIOS" in a 3D outlined "grungy" font, colored orange and surrounded by a thick black outline. The cat growls and says "Mmmmmm-Mega Cat!" before freezing still in a neutral position.

Variants:

  • On games up to Fork Parker's Crunch Out, the logo is still.
  • Sometimes, the orange is rendered as a gold color.
  • The cat may slide up a bit from the text.
  • On their NES games, as well as the 2017 version of Log Jammers for the NES, the text is cleaned up and slightly larger, there's a gap between the text and the cat, and the entire logo has added shine and shading. The final version of the NES version of Log Jammers uses the standard version of the logo.
  • On Diamond Thieves, only the cat head is present, containing within a white circle with a pair of grey rings.
  • On the Genesis version of Little Medusa, a special animated version is used: The outline of the cat rotates in via several pixels flying into place, and then is filled from bottom to top by pixels. The cat head then zooms out and the screen flashes, filling it with orange as "MEGA CAT STUDIOS", now in a simple black Impact font, appears below.
    • On Kudzu, a still version of this is seen on a black background.
  • On Arkagis Revolution, the entire logo is rendered in a green wireframe form and lacks any grunge effects. The text "PRESENTED BY" is also present on top.

Technique: 2D digital animation.

Audio: The cat's dialogue. The early version is silent.

Audio Variants:

  • On Coffee Crisis for the Genesis, a 4-note shrill synth tune plays.
  • The Little Medusa variant has a simple chiptune-styled tune.
  • The Arkagis Revolution variant has the cat's voice bitcrushed.

2nd Logo (January 17, 2023-)

Visuals: On a gray background, a white circle pops in the middle of the screen, containing a black/purple ring and a slightly redesigned version of the cat from before, being noticeably cleaner and having better line weight. The cat then meows briefly with a notable crunch in quality as the circle moves to the left, making room for the text "MEGA CAT STUDIOS", colored purple and aligned to the left, drop down one-by-one.

Variants:

  • Earlier uses have the logo colored orange instead of purple, as well as the purple ring inside the circle colored grey.
  • On World Championship Boxing Manager II, only the cat is present.
  • On Renfield: Bring Your Own Blood, the logo is still, with the cat colored grey.
  • On WrestleQuest, after the logo is complete, Muchacho Man (one of the characters from the titular game) comes in from the right and says "Oh yeah!" while patting his elbow, before delivering a dramatic elbow drop onto the logo, causing it to explode. Once the dust clears, the logo is reduced to a shattered mess while Muchacho Man simply pulls on his mustache, flexes, and cracks his bones.
  • On Five Nights At Freddy's: Into The Pit, the logo takes place on a cracked arcade cabinet screen as the screen glitches to reveal a white outline of Spring Bonnie's head and bow tie before glitching into the logo.
  • On the Backyard Sports remasters, the cat logo plasters over the Humongous Entertainment logo, along with a copyright date below in purple.

Technique: 2D computer animation.

Audio: An "8-bit" whoosh plays, followed by the cat's meowing, and then a swirling note as bells are heard when the logo drops in. The still version is silent.

Audio Variants:

  • The WrestleQuest variant has a short rock theme alongside sounds for the corresponding actions.
  • The Five Nights At Freddy's: Into The Pit variant has glitching noises, along with the bells and meow at the end.
  • On the Backyard Sports remasters, the audio from the Humongous Entertainment logo is heard, though certain games are silent.
