Entertainment Film Distributors

Entertainment Film Distributors is a British distributor of independent films in the UK and Ireland, founded in 1978 and owned by Nigel Green. Their home entertainment division was called Entertainment in Video.

The company notably distributed New Line Cinema titles in the UK from 1990 to 2010.

1st Logo (1978-1987)

Visuals: On a black background, four copies of the multicoloured word "ENTERTAINMENT" move towards the centre in different directions. One copy of the word remains after the others reach the centre. The white texts "FILM DISTRIBUTORS LIMITED" and "PRESENTATION" fade in beneath "ENTERTAINMENT".

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: A timpani roll, leading to a bombastic fanfare, which is the abridged version of "Gates of Rome" by Jack Trombey.

Availability: Seen on earlier UK releases from the company such as Going Steady.

2nd Logo (May 15, 1987-2002)

Visuals: There is a close-up of continuously moving water. "ENTERTAINMENT" in a metallic font in the same colour as the moving water emerges from said water. The logo zooms out to reveal that the water is a rectangle, and the animation of the moving water freezes for a moment. As the screen zooms out, two abstract F's of red and yellow appear from the left side of the screen. A yellow line emerges from the right side of the screen above "ENTERTAINMENT". Another yellow line appears from the top of the screen and rests above the rectangle. Two more yellow lines appear from the bottom of the screen and rest alongside the rectangle. The stacked words "FILM DISTRIBUTORS" are revealed on the rectangle. The two F's rest below "ENTERTAINMENT" and the rectangle flashes at the screen and the animation of the moving water resumes.

Trivia: Unlike its home video counterpart, the logo fades in frozen for a moment before the animation starts.

Variant: An open matte version exists.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A synth hum, followed by a "tingling" noise and an eight-note synth piano tune which ends with a gunfire-like sound. This was more commonly used on its home video counterpart. Sometimes, the logo is silent.

Availability: Seen on UK export prints of films such as The Piano, The Legend of 1900, and Highlander II, among others.

  • The UK theatrical prints of Hellraiser and House II: The Second Story (both released in 1987, the year this logo debuted) were amongst the first to feature this logo, plastering the 1984 New World Pictures logo in both cases.
  • The open matte variant shows up on the Spanish CBS/Fox VHS release of House II: The Second Story, presumably sourced from the UK theatrical prints.
  • This logo can also be found on a French iTunes print of Super Mario Bros (1993).
  • This is known to have appeared on a 35mm print of The Mask.

3rd Logo (1995-2002)

Visuals: On a grainy blue background, there's an inverted abstract "F" casting a shadow. The underlined text "ENTERTAINMENT FILM DISTRIBUTION" in a 3D fashion appears superimposed on the symbol, followed by "PRESENTS" placed below the name. The logo fades to black slowly.

Technique: 2D animation.

Audio: None.

Availability:

  • This logo was used as an alternative logo on UK prints of movies like The Long Kiss Goodnight.
  • It was also seen on early movies made by EFD, such as Rancid Aluminium and Before You Go.

4th Logo (2002-2007)

Visuals: On a purple gradient background, abstract "F" from before, but in a purplish colour, fades in. A bright white star reveals "ENTERTAINMENT FILM DISTRIBUTORS" in a bold, tall, and thin white font across the "F". The "F" shines for a while and zooms out before fading to black.

Technique: CGI.

Audio: None or the opening/closing theme of the film.

Availability:

  • Can be seen on UK prints of films from 2002-2007, such as the first two Saw films, Elf, In Good Company, White Noise, Valiant, Brokeback Mountain, The Departed, Wedding Crashers, and Snakes on a Plane, among others.
  • It is also seen at the end of (Alex Rider: Operation) Stormbreaker.

5th Logo (2007-)

Visuals: Against a black background, there is an outline of a glass abstract "F" shining. The "F" then appears in gray and with no glass, and turns a bit, casting a reflection at the bottom. Then, the name "ENTERTAINMENT FILM DISTRIBUTORS" shines in below the "F".

Technique: CGI.

Audio: A short synth entry with two ding sounds.

Audio Variant: Sometimes, the logo is silent or has the opening theme of the movie.

Availability: This logo is seen on current EFD releases in the UK since 2007, such as The Bad Education Movie and the St. Trinian's film duology.

  • It is also seen at the end of Wild Target, as well as UK theatrical prints of The Inbetweeners Movie and its sequel.
  • Sometimes, it is also seen plastering older logos when EFD re-release their films; for example, it was seen on the 2015 re-release of Brokeback Mountain.
