CBBC (called Children's BBC from 1985-1997) is a division of the BBC and is aimed at children ages 6 to 12. It originally started on September 9, 1985. BBC Four, along with CBBC and BBC Radio 4 Extra are proposed to end their terrestrial networks, but in 2024, the shutdown was postponed, and three television channels are still broadcasting.

1st ID (September 9, 1985-1989?, September 9, 2015)

Visuals: On a black background, the letters "BBC" (in red, green and blue respectively) appear one by one, then "CHILDREN'S" pops up in light yellow.

Trivia:

  • This appeared on the 30 Years of CBBC TV special made to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the block.
  • This logo was designed by Jeremy Ruston and Brian Treggiden.

Variants:

  • An early version exists where the logo took place on a blue background.
    • Originally, "CHILDREN'S" was underneath the BBC text and had no animation except the flickering.
      • A CEEFAX variant exists where the text "CEEFAX 888" is beneath the "CHILDREN'S" text.
  • In 1987, a later version was created, in which "BBC" is in gold and "CHILDREN'S" is in teal, and the background is either black (for BBC One) or white (for BBC Two).
  • In September 1986, a Children's BBC promo variant exists on BBC One where the Children's BBC logo on a black background is shown with a magenta outline surrounding the logo.
  • A variant was broadcast on December 9th, 1986, which consists of red curtains being shown. A few seconds later, the curtains suddenly wipe out from the centre to the left/right, giving an illusion of the curtains opening.
  • Sometimes, the colours of the BBC text are swapped. Here are the swaps founded:
    • The first B's colour is green and the second B's colours is red.
    • The first B's colour is green, the second B's colour is blue and the C's colour is red.
    • The first B's colour is blue and the C's colour is red.
  • The later version can also be seen on BBC1 Saturday Superstore's "Presentation Tour" when Philip Schofield pushes the many buttons on his vision mixer. Only the end flickering is shown during its cameo. A still version of it on a black background can also be seen on one of his fourteen front monitors.
  • Broadcast on September 9th, 2015, as part of the block's 30th anniversary, when the first B appears, the background is blue. As soon as the second B appears, the background turns orange. As soon as the C appears, the background turns black, and then back to orange with the "CHILDREN'S" text being red.

Technique: 2D animation made on the BBC Micro B computer.

Audio:

  • 1985:
  • 1985-1986: A high-pitched 4-note 8-bit theme.
  • 1986:

2nd ID (September 1987-September 1989)

Visuals: On a black background, moving trails begin to form shapes via their initials, consisting of a car, a horse, an ice cream, a lighthouse, a duck, a rocket, an elephant, a number nine, and a ship being drawn showing the letters of the word "CHILDREN'S". Then, the trails form the BBC text.

Variants:

  • A shorter version also exists.
  • Sometimes the logo zooms out slightly to show the animated blue background (for BBC1 Scotland) or a black background (for BBC One).
    • Also on BBC One, where the background is revealed to be streaks with copies shrinking. The logo is chroma keyed.
  • A promo variant exists where the logo zooms in after the promo footage is shown.

Technique: Cel animation.

Audio: "Boom" by Anthony and Gaynor Sadler.

    • Another promo variant exists where the promo footage is played, then the CBBC logo falls down to cover the screen with the logo.
    • Again, another promo variant exists where the promo footage is played, then the logo spins, zooms and waves into view until it covers the screen with the logo, underneath the BBC text says "NEW FOR 91"
  • A closing variant exists where the logo plays in reverse.

Technique: 2D animation made on the Acorn Archimedes computer.

Audio: An electronic jingle, accompanied by a chorus and a 3 note fanfare once the BBC text is formed.

4th ID (September 9, 1991-September 25, 1994, September 9, 2015)

Visuals: On a black background, letters in an odd font which spell "CHILDREN'S" form out and then rotate to their usual positions. The 1988 BBC logo pops up afterwards.

Trivia: This appeared on the 30 Years of CBBC TV special made to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the block.

Variants:

  • On the later variant, the 1988 BBC logo takes slightly longer to pop up.
  • An in-credit version of the logo also exists.
  • A variant exists where an explosion occurs. Later, a shape-formed face appears distorting in a black background, sometimes cutting to split-second shots of the logo. After the logo is formed, the 1988 BBC logo appears under the "N" in "Children's", as the text "...But First This" wipes in below the logo.

Technique: CGI.

Audio:

  • September 9, 1991 - April 1992: A downbeat electronic theme. This theme was considered to be too dull and was eventually replaced with the next theme.
  • April 1992 - September 26, 1994, September 9, 2015: A bouncy, upbeat theme with a huge thud at the end. This was usually followed by a man saying "OOH! OOH! OOH!", taken from the song "Looking Out My Window" by Tom Jones.

Audio Variants:

BBC Scotland also had their versions of the Children's BBC idents which were the same as the network versions but with the Scotland branding incorporated into the ident. These were used on weekday mornings in the school holidays from October 1994 to July 1997. The 1991-1994 ident, along with its accompanying Broom Cupboard theming, was re-used on 9 September 2015 as part of the anniversary special Hacker's Birthday Bash: 30 Years of Children's BBC.

    • A purple background variant also exists.

Trivia: CBBC's green blobs were designed as a counterpart to the yellow "bugs" of its sister channel CBeebies that is aimed at very young children, which was launched on the same day. Also, the alternate versions of the yellow bugs were used on the now-defunct Canadian channel BBC Kids from 2001-2011.

Variant: Before the channel was released, a promo variant was shown on BBC One. It consists of the red background with similar shapes with the CBBC logo, beneath is the text "The all new CBBC channel" under that is a smaller piece of text reading "Launches 11th February". • The camera follows the path of strings making a U-like curve until it hits the CBBC logo.
  • The CBBC logo is already in the strings that are forming the circle, in which the logo then drifts a bit as it looks around. The logo then quickly zooms to the right.
  • The CBBC logo zooms through the tunnel before hitting a ball of arrows in which it rotates all. The CBBC logo then settles for a bit before going "back into action" and hits the same ball of arrows again, which makes the green arrow point at the logo which has already settled down, with the strings making a circle.
  • The strings makes some loops in which the CBBC logo goes through it. The action is done 3 times and then settles into a comfortable position.
  • In the same tunnel is the strings forming a rings which made the CBBC logo follow it. The camera then goes in between the ring and then the CBBC stops moving as soon as it bumps into the camera.
  • The CBBC logo acts as if its looking at the strings forming a circle, when the CBBC logo almost makes it inside, it backs off a bit acting like the strings are too dangerous. It then re-attempts to go in the strings forming a loop and it successfully does.
  • The strings form a tornado-like shape, which make the CBBC logo spiral inwards towards it. After it reaches the bottom, the logo then spins before settling down.
  • The strings form a wavy-like shape which make the CBBC logo follow it. After this, the CBBC logo bounces outwards to settle down.
  • The CBBC logo is facing upwards, acting as if it's going to blast off. It then blasts off like a rocket, sending the logo flying.
  • The CBBC logo is zooming by to the right like a rocket, but then gets interrupted in which it makes the camera continue moving. It then pans over to reveal the CBBC logo.
  • Closing - Inside the circle making the strings, there's the same CBBC logo. It zooms through the ball of arrows that point in different directions. Then goes through it which makes the arrows spin all over until they form back. The CBBC logo does it again but in a different direction, which makes the pink arrow point at the logo going by and the text is either written as "Bye!" or "Switch to the CBBC Channel Now!".
