Yūma Kuga (空閑 遊真, Kuga Yūma ?) is one of the four main characters.[15] He is a young mysterious Neighbor Teen as well as one of the two ace attackers in the rookie B-Rank team of Tamakoma Second.
Appearance
[edit | edit source]Yūma is shorter than the average for his age range. He has white hair and red eyes. It is later revealed that his hair was originally black and his body had stopped growing since he was 11 years old because it was made out of Trion, thus explained his short stature.[7]
He wears a blue suit top and gray bottoms traditional of Japanese high school students. When not in his trion body or school uniform, he usually wears a purple hoodie with a paw symbol and the text "UMA" (which stands for "Unidentified Mysterious Animal"), and beige baggy jeans pants.
In Black Trigger mode, Yūma gains a black jumpsuit which Replica can fuse itself with. In C-rank trion body, unlike most other trainees, he gains an all-black uniform instead of the classical all-white one; it has a black jacket with thick white stripes running down from the sides of his collar to the sides of his sleeves and also around his collar and thin gray stripes in the borders of the zip fastener and collar.
In B-rank trion body, he has a uniform similar to Osamu's, with some differences. His uniform consists of a blue jacket and black pants that tuck into his knee-high black boots. His jacket has a black stripe around the collar and black stripes going down the sleeves, with an orange Tamakoma Branch emblem on each shoulder. The sleeves merge with his gloves, ending at his palm and knuckles, and the palms and fingers of his gloves are green. He has one white cord around each shoulder, the B-rank logo with his squad's position is over his left chest.
Personality
[edit | edit source]Yūma has a laid back, naturally sociable personality. He is not very knowledgeable about Japanese customs, being from another world (despite having a Japanese father), leading to some run-ins with thugs who try to take advantage of his ignorance [16][17]. His childhood training under his father and early life in the Neighborhood shaped his general nature, as he was initially belligerent due to his unshakable belief that he must return whatever harm is done to him[18]. However, he seemed to mellow out after Osamu's warnings and joining Border. Currently, he seems to be aligned with Border's cause, fighting against Neighbor forces, and he has made many friends and acquaintances.
In multiple instances, he has shown to be logical and pragmatic to a cold degree. He suggested leaving the bullies that bothered them to a Bamster, advised Osamu to stay away from the Trion Soldier rather than save the students as he could die[19], and was perplexed at first by Osamu's self-sacrificial nature because he was too weak to actually help him against the bullies[20].
Despite his happy exterior, he is actually deeply depressed due to his father's sacrifice to revive him. He was emotionally impacted by Yugo's death that it left him without direction. This is shown in how he continued serving Calvaria's army and obeying orders of those who lied to him and used him.[21] Only after the war ended and Yūma had no purpose anymore did he fulfill his father’s wishes to go to Earth, and even then, he was still obeying an order from his deceased father rather than acting on his own decision.[22] This impact is shown further by how he asks his companion, Replica, for permission before using his own Black Trigger, and Replica telling him it's his decision on numerous occasions[23]. After witnessing Osamu's reckless yet heroic actions, Yūma showed initiative and saved him multiple times regardless of the risks. When coming to Earth, his only sense of purpose was to revive his father, as he felt tremendous responsibility for his death.[24] After meeting Osamu, Yūma decides that his purpose is to support Osamu in his goal of helping Chika.[25] He consciously chooses not to act as the leader or captain. He willingly defaults leadership and strategic command to Osamu, instead choosing to dedicate his formidable combat skills to supporting Osamu’s goals.[26]
Osamu influenced Yūma as shown in the Second Large-Scale Invasion. Yūma, who already had slim chances of victory, decided to send Replica to support Osamu and Chika.[27] He purposefully left himself disadvantaged in battle and made his own decision to protect them. He risked his life to defeat his opponent with a risky plan and went against his father's teachings a second time.[28] Yūma has the capacity for great anger. When Midorikawa challenged Osamu to a 10 round solo rank war and purposefully gathered a crowd to humiliate him, Yūma was angered on his behalf and challenged the A rank Attacker to a solo rank war himself to save Osamu's reputation.[29]
Yūma has a thoughtful, or at least, prudent side. He refused Shinoda's offer of being promoted instantly to B-rank despite the fact it would help him form a team with Osamu faster, in consideration of those who won't take it well because he's a Neighbor. He instead preferred to follow Border's rules and reach B-rank on his own.[30]
Quotes
[edit | edit source]- (To various people) "You make up the stupidest lies."
- (Talking to thugs.) "I told you that I'd send you flying. You guys... Shouldn't lie." [31]
- (To Miwa) "Now then, why don't we have a little discussion?" [32]
- (To Usami) "Hmph. In other words, if I want to become a B-rank, it'll be alright if I kick the C-rank guys' asses." [33]
- (To Shun Midorikawa) "You know...lying is a bad habit."
- (To Viza) "You know.... You make up some stupid lies." [34]
- (Quoting Osamu to Viza) "Even though my chances of winning are slim, I still can't run away." [1]
- (To Rindō) "I'm not really upset, we all trained the same way. I won't be able to win all the time, but, fighting strong people is fun. The person who thought of ranked matches is smart, especially the part where the loser doesn't die." [35]
- (To Murakami) "I got permission from my leader. This time, I'll be playing with you.." [36]
- (referring to his father) "There are three lessons he taught me when I was six. Lesson one: Protect yourself, by yourself. Parents can't protect you forever. Work out or think hard and figure out a way to take care of things by yourself. Don't get close to things you can't take care of. Use your imagination to avoid danger. Lesson two: There's more than one answer. Things can be resolved in many ways. On the contrary, there's no answer in some cases. Don't get hung up with one way. And finally, lesson 3: Don't think your parents are always right." [37]
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- "Yūma" is a combination of two words meaning "to play" (遊 ?) and "real, genuine" (真 ?), together his name means "to play for real" or "playing real," which relates to his attitude as a member of Border. "Kuga" is a combination of "sky" (空 ?) and "leisure" (閑 ?).
- The Author can't imagine Yūma getting any taller, however if Yūma did grow he would be about 175 cm(5 ft 9 in).[38]
- According to The Author, his image of design is a Chicken.[39]
- Yūma tends to scare people with his eyes.[40]
- His "UMA" hoodie might be a reference to his name, as UMA (ユーマ, Yūma ?) and Yūma (遊真 ?) are homophonous in Japanese.
- Yūma apparently dislikes being called "senpai," as he tells Midorikawa to call him just "Yūma" when the latter calls him "Yūma-senpai."[41]
- Ironically, he previously ordered Midorikawa to call Osamu "senpai" should he defeat him in battle.[42]
- He likes Japanese food.[14]
- He came second in the First Popularity Poll.
- Yūma does not need to sleep, due to his regular body being made of Trion as well.[43]
- Oji's nickname for Yūma is Cougar. This is a pun on Yūma's surname, as cougar is rendered as "kūgā" in katakana.

Q: Regarding Yūma's mother, can we get even just a little bit of info about her?
A: Yūgo told Yūma "if I die, go to Border" instead of saying "rely on your mother" or "go meet your mother", so I think she has already passed away. The traits Yūma inherited from his mother are bold decision-making, expression of will through action, and lack of whining.

Q: Who is the main character, Yūma or Osamu?
A: Either one. I personally consider the four people I drew on the first title page as the main characters (Yūichi Jin, Chika Amatori, Yūma Kuga, and Osamu Mikumo)

Q: If Yūma were able to grow, how tall would he be?
A: I can't imagine Yuma being taller, but since Yugo, his father, seemed to be rather tall, he probably would have been too. About 175cm maybe?
