I thought the hardest part of building trading systems would be finding the right strategy. It isn't. Much of the real work is handling stale data, unreliable APIs, partial failures, duplicate orders, and misleading logs. I'm going to start writing about that work as I learn.

A log can say “record updated” without proving the change was saved. One lesson from my database investigation: connect the attempted change with its confirmed outcome where the write happens. In that investigation, following the value later only showed the aftermath.

We found an incorrect strategy tag in a database. We had logs everywhere, so I thought tracing it would be easy. The logs showed when the bad value propagated, but not what originally wrote it or why. Having logs is not the same as having traceability.
