    History

    Development

Ottifants (or "Ottifanten") were originally a product of Otto's music career, first appearing on covers of his comedy albums in the 1970s. Originally just stylised elephants, the characters evolved into the Bommels; a family of bipedal elephant-like creatures, who appeared in comics and merchandise across (West) Germany. There was a push in the early 1990s to turn the brand into a huge multi-media franchise, with both this video game and an animated series set to rival the The Simpsons[10] (though it only aired for one season in Germany).

The Ottifants was announced at a special presentation in Hamburg, alongside Otto who performed a 45 minute set on stage[11] which was subsequently broadcast on MTV[12]. Otto was reportedly inspired to get into video games after a fan introduced him to Super Mario World[11] and was involved at all stages of development[12].

Ottifanten, in both their original and bipedal designs would appear in subsequent (unrelated) games for the Game Boy line, and continue to feature in Otto's work to this day.
