History
At midnight on December 31, 1992, Sega of America acquired Interactive Designs - a California-based game developer founded by Rod and Nancy Nakamoto - and merged it into Sega's operations as an internal research and development studio. The studio was rebranded under the name Sega Interactive Development Division. in Diamond Bar, California.Lua error: A database query error has occurred. Under Sega's ownership, Sega Interactive developed several high-profile projects during the 16-bit and 32-bit eras. The studio conceptualized and developed the 1993 fighting game Eternal Champions for the Mega Drive, which became one of Sega of America's best-selling US releases of that period.[3] It also contributed to other projects across Sega platforms, handling the 32X conversion of Star Wars Arcade in 1994[4] and created Eternal Champion's enhanced 1995 Mega-CD pseudo-sequel, Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side. It also worked with The Walt Disney Company to develop the licensed Mega Drive titles TaleSpin and Bonkers, as well as original games like the high-profile Garfield: Caught in the Act. During these first three years the division expanded significantly in size and capabilities, employing multiple dozens of developers.
After Rod Nakamoto's retirement in 1995, Sega of America appointed John Brandstetter - formerly of Turbo Technologies and Hudson Soft USA - as studio director.[5][7] Under Brandstetter's creative direction, the division expanded and began pursing more experimental projects like 32 Xtreme, Ratchet and Bolt, and an SVP chip-powered port of Super Star Wars. Brandstetter worked closely with producers like John Kuwaye and Mark Nausha and maintained connections with both Sega Enterprises, Ltd. in Japan and engineers from Hudson Soft USA and NEC Corporation of America.[7] The division also reportedly participated in hardware and tools development, including work related to the Sega Saturn,[3] Sega Neptune, and 32X.[7]
By mid-1995, Sega's corporate strategy shifted toward the upcoming Saturn and the broader Windows PC and online markets, prompting a reorganization of its American development studios.Lua error: A database query error has occurred. Sega of America, in partnership with parent company CSK, formed a new software publishing arm called SegaSoft in 1995 to focus on the Windows PC and internet markets.[4] As part of this transition, Sega Interactive was dissolved shortly after completion of Eternal Champions: Challenge from the Dark Side in mid 1995.[3] Remaining in the Diamond Bar offices, management of the studio was placed under the umbrella of SegaSoft and was internally rebranded as SegaSoft LA.
Many of Sega Interactive's developers joined Kronos Digital Entertainment and Point of View.
