Chaos Field (カオスフィールド) is a Sega NAOMI GD-ROM arcade and Sega Dreamcast game developed by Able Corporation and Milestone in 2004. It was the first game by Milestone, and (much like their other games) is a vertically scrolling shoot-'em-up. The Dreamcast version was only released in Japan.

Gameplay

Unusually for the primary game mode of an arcade shoot 'em up, Chaos Field consists entirely of boss battles. The bosses each have their own time limit and consist of multiple parts that the player must destroy. By default, on Dreamcast, the A button may be held to fire shots, and the B button may be pressed to swing the sword. Tapping the sword button multiple times creates a combo attack. Similar to the sword in Radiant Silvergun, it can cancel certain types of bullet. The X and Y buttons are used for changing between "Order Field" and "Chaos Field", which determine the effectiveness of certain attacks, and the abilities of bosses.

Certain button combinations can be pressed for other effects. Pressing the shot and sword button at the same time spawns a temporary stationary barrier in front of the ship's current position. Pressing the sword and the mode change button at the same time unleashes a homing attack, which selects enemies using a limited-range radar scan.

The game uses a 4:3 vertical viewport, much in the manner of Radiant Silvergun or Giga Wing.

Characters

Chaos Field - DC - Hal.png
Hal ("Mixed Blue" ship)

His ship is a balanced standard fighter based on data collected from past battles.

Chaos Field - DC - Ifumi.png
Ifumi ("Flawed Red" ship)

Her ship is an enhanced version of the current standard fighter, with improved manoeuvrability.

Chaos Field - DC - Jinn.png
Jinn ("Fake Yellow" ship)

His ship is an early prototype with heavy armament, a large amount of attack power, and reduced mobility.

History

Development

Development of Chaos Field began immediately after the formation of developer Milestone in April 2003. By September 2003, a prototype was complete. After its completion, they immediately began work on Radirgy.[4]

Legacy

GameCube and PlayStation 2 ports were released in 2005. The GameCube version features a unique game mode with waves of weaker enemies in between the bosses.
