Galactus is dead, and Dracula is taking his place as an A-list Marvel antagonist. That's right, the most famous vampire in history has been steadily rising through the ranks of Marvel's most powerful villains. Now, as the battle for the fate of Marvel's 2099 timeline concludes, Dracula has officially gained possession of a highly dangerous artifact: Galactus' heart.

The End 2099 #5 is written by Steve Orlando, with art by Ibraim Roberson and more. Dracula has played a pivotal role in the latest 2099 miniseries from the jump, and the climax is no exception.

The End 2099 #5, Mephisto gives Dracula the heart of Galactus

Though it's called The End, the story leaves several dangling plotlines when it's all over. Most intriguingly, Mephisto gives Dracula Galactus' heart, massively upscaling the vamp's threat level.

The End 2099 #5, heroes and villains bursting through the darkness of space

When the dust settles in The End 2099 #5, Dracula comes out on top. He gains an immeasurably powerful potential weapon, and a tacit alliance with Marvel's equivalent of the Devil. It seems that ultimately a key part of The End 2099 was to elevate Dracula as a threat in the Marvel Universe, and in this regard the book succeeds.

Though he's best known as a bad guy, Galactus plays the hero at the end of The End, sacrificing himself to destroy Knull, the King in Black, another one of Marvel's deadliest villains. Galactus uses the Ultimate Nullifier to wipe himself and Knull out, but in the aftermath, the survivors find that the Devourer of Worlds' heart survived.

Another major Marvel villain, Mephisto, steps in to claim the heart, but Dracula shoots his shot and argues that he deserves it. And Mephisto gives it to him. The move outrages Silver Surfer 2099, who rhetorically asks Mephisto: "Do you know what [Dracula] will do with such power?" With this line, the Surfer voices the exact question Marvel readers have coming out of The End 2099 #5.

Dracula's Elevation To Major Marvel Villain Status Is 50+ Years In The Making

RIP Galactus, Long Live Dracula 2099

The Marvel Comics version of Dracula debuted back in 1972. In a sense, he's no different from Thor: a legendary figure that fits easily into the Marvel Universe. In the 44 years since, he's been an on-and-off antagonist of various Marvel heroes. Of course, there's the vampire hero Blade, but Dracula has also been a formidable foe for the X-Men, Spider-Man, and more.

Within the last several years, Marvel has resurrected its efforts to push Dracula as a key figure in Marvel lore. The 2024 crossover event "Blood Hunt" featured him prominently, and The End 2099 gave him a starring role. It's ending cliffhanger, with Dracula going off to parts unknown with Galactus' heart, seems to prefigure more big things coming for the GOAT vampire.

We don't know what to expect from Marvel's Dracula right now, but that just means the door is wide open to speculation. Will Dracula be the "Big Bad" of the next era of the 2099 timeline? Or will he find a way to travel backward in time to wreak havoc in the present-day Marvel Universe?

Whatever happens next will confirm what we suspect right now: that Dracula is officially an A-list Marvel villain now. That is, our expert opinion is that he's going to continue to play a major role in Marvel's plans over the next couple of years, and that all starts with what he chooses to do with Galactus' heart.
