Il programma stunnel è progettato per funzionare come wrapper per cifratura SSL tra il client remoto e il server remoto o locale (avviabile via inetd). Il concetto è che se si hanno demoni che non possono usare SSL in esecuzione sul sistema, si può facilmente configurarli per comunicare con i client su canali SSL sicuri.
stunnel può essere usato per aggiungere la funzionalità SSL a demoni inetd usati comunemente, come server POP-2, POP-3 e IMAP, senza alcun cambiamento nel codice del programma.
