The Sift

The Sift is an upcoming dimension first seen in Minecraft Dungeons II that is planned to release in 2027. Associated features include a new mob called the blub, alongside several new blocks for which no names have been officially revealed.
Content
[edit | edit source]Note: Only the blub has been named officially so far. All other features listed here are given deliberately generic names until further official information arises. Do not add any names for these unless explicitly confirmed by an official outside source or add any speculative features based off similar features (Rule #4).
Blocks
[edit | edit source]Several salmon-colored blocks are referred to as orange in color in the Audio Description.[3]
- A dark grayish stone-like block that has a turquoise tint.
- A dark pink dirt-like block that generates naturally below grass blocks.

Green Sift grass block [unofficial name]

Light Sift short grass [unofficial name]
- This version has a lighter salmon color but is referred to as orange in the Audio Description.[3]
Green Sift short grass [unofficial name]
- Short green foliage visible in the distance in the reveal footage.
Dark Sift tall grass [unofficial name]
- It is not clear if multiple shades of this exist from the reveal footage.
- The closest of these to the camera have their bottom halves mostly obscured by shorter variants; however, it seems as though they are indeed two blocks high, rather than one block high growing on an obscured grass block.
Green Sift tall grass [unofficial name]
- Tall green foliage visible in the distance of the reveal footage.
Sift tree log [unofficial name]
- A gray tree trunk block, comparable in color to the pale oak log.
Sift tree leaves [unofficial name]
- Comprises the upper canopies of a generated tree feature in an unnamed, distant forested biome depicted in the reveal.
Sift foliage [unofficial name]
- This stalactite-like block, much like pale hanging moss from pale oak trees or weeping vines from huge crimson fungi, appears to hang down from the Sift tree features, attached to the underside of Sift tree leaves blocks.
Mobs
[edit | edit source]- A small, rabbitlike[4] passive mob that is native to the Sift and can squeak.
Environment
[edit | edit source]The Sift appears to have a significant amount of elevation changes; cliffs of at least a dozen blocks may be seen, and the top of a tree-like structure can be seen in the distance between some of the foliage in the foreground, implying a height difference of several dozen blocks.
Biomes
[edit | edit source]Pink meadow [unofficial name]
- A biome that is floored with salmon/pink dirt-like blocks and grasses.
- The blub is seen in this biome.
Green meadow [unofficial name]
- A biome that is floored with green dirt-like blocks and grasses visible in the distance to the right of the Sift forest in the reveal footage.
Sift forest [unofficial name]
- A biome wooded with Sift trees.
- Seems to generate trees densely packed together similarly to dark forests.
Features
[edit | edit source]- Generated feature composed of dark gray log-like blocks similar to pale oak logs and white leaf-like blocks.
- Appears to generate with a thick trunk that thins further up the tree, with the thicker part of the trunk appearing much thicker than the trunks of previously existing tree types.

History
[edit | edit source]Announcement
[edit | edit source]| Pre-announcement | |||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| July 10, 2012 | Nathan Adams (Dinnerbone) states that there exist no current plans for a new dimension to be added until the Nether and the End, the latter of which was in the game for less than a year at that time, receive further content depth. | ||||||
| October 19, 2012 | Dinnerbone states once again that a fourth dimension would not be added until the existing dimensions were further developed. | ||||||
| April 17, 2014 | Dinnerbone states that the team would like to implement new dimensions into the game on the basis that they're "fun to add", but that one presumably would not be added "any time soon". | ||||||
| September 29, 2018 | [more information needed] When prompted on whether another dimension would be implemented into the base game, Cory Scheviak (Cojomax99), Dinnerbone, Jason Major, Anita Surajit and Adrian Östergård state that they are still unsatisfied by the state of current dimensions' content depth, and would prefer to focus on further expansion before implementing a fourth. | ||||||
| November 22, 2022 | Brandon Pearce (kingbdogz) discusses future implementation of dimensions, stating that a new dimension would have to functionally distinguish itself from existing dimensions from a gameplay perspective, and also positing them as a solution for spreading environmental content as to not create an overwhelming experience in a single dimension. | ||||||
| August 19, 2026 | When asked about why the Sift was being introduced to Dungeons II and not Minecraft itself, Jens Bergensten (jeb_) elaborates on the fact that each dimension needs a functional "reason to exist", which is ultimately noted as a dauntingly open-ended requirement. | ||||||
| Announcement | |||||||
| September 26, 2026 | The Sift was announced for Minecraft at Minecraft Live – September 2026. | ||||||
| The audio description of the video identifies the blocks as orange rather than pink.[3] | |||||||
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- Despite Agnes Larsson stating that the Sift is the first new dimension to be implemented into the base game in 14 years, its 2027-scheduled implementation actually increases that count to at least 15, as the End was implemented first in November 2011.
- As of currently, the End was first accessible in a development version 15 years and 12 days ago (Java Edition Beta 1.9 Prerelease 4, released 2011-10-13), and in a full release 14 years and 341 days ago (Java Edition 1.0.0, released 2011-11-18).
