Treasure chests
[edit source]I'm looking at the code for JE 1.14.2 right now and I'm not seeing any evidence that nautilus shells can be generated in treasure chests. Does anybody have any source on that, or should I add a note saying that that's just in BE? –Preceding unsigned comment was added by 108.183.144.148 (talk) at 6:05, 23 June 2019 (UTC). Nautiluses/nautili
[edit source]Hello! The proper plural of 'nautilus' is 'nautili', according to Latin declensions ('-us' becomes '-i' in the nominative plural), and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if it would be possible to edit this page to reflect that? Thanks! -Illager (talk) 06:56, 24 August 2025 (UTC)
- A quick Internet search reveals that both nautiluses and nautili are acceptable, but that nautiluses is by far the preferred form. HolyT (talk) 04:35, 25 August 2025 (UTC)
- Very well, thank you for your swift reply. -Illager (talk) 10:02, 25 August 2025 (UTC)
- According to ngram viewer, "nautili" was far more common than "nautiluses" before 1930, then they were used approximately equally for the next 50 years, and after 1980 "nautiluses" became the more common plural form. Online content on the World Wide Web began existing later, in the 1990s, so it isn't surprising that internet searches would show that "nautilusus" is now the preferred form. ~Anachronist (talk) 17:48, 30 August 2025 (UTC)
- If that's the modern and preferred term it only makes sense for this Wiki to use it; this site serves to make Minecraft knowledge more accessable, and the best way to do that is write using the vulgate, even if it is disrespectful to the Latin roots whence the language came. I see why my request has been rejected, and respect that. -Illager (talk) 08:25, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
- There are many nouns ending in "-us" that would look strange (or amusing) if the plural ended with "-i", such as corpus, campus, bonus, anus, circus, doofus, genus, nexus, ruckus, status, surplus, tinnitus, walrus, and so on. Perhaps some of those had "-i" plural forms in the past; I haven't checked.
- The one that used to trip me up is "mongoose". And it took me a while to learn that the plural of "squid" is just "squid" if you're referring to more than one of the same species, but it's "squids" if you're referring to a number of different species. ~Anachronist (talk) 15:54, 31 August 2025 (UTC)
- Ha-ha, yes, some would look silly (though a few you mentioned did, at one point, use the '-i' affix such as 'corpi' or 'boni' [anything Latinate, to simplify'). I never liked any of those 'oose' words like 'goose', 'mongoose', or the like, especially since they end in the '-us' affix (or so it sounds). -Illager (talk) 09:32, 1 September 2025 (UTC)
