Farming

[edit | edit source]

The poisonous potato is a rare drop when harvesting (destroying) potato crops; a fully grown plant has a 2% chance of dropping one in addition to the 2–5 regular potatoes. Using a tool with Fortune has no effect on the drop rate.

If a farmer villager breaks a potato crop, a poisonous potato can still drop, but the villager will not collect the item. Therefore, together with an automatic collection system, the process of farming poisonous potatoes can be automated.

Usage

[edit | edit source]

Poisonous potatoes cannot be planted on farmland or baked. They also have no use with the composter.[1]

To eat a poisonous potato, press and hold use while it is selected in the hotbar. Eating one restores 2 (🍗) hunger and 1.2 hunger saturation and has a 60% chance of applying 5 seconds of Poison I, draining 4HP❤️❤️ points of health. A poisonous potato restores twice as much hunger and saturation as a normal potato.

Trivia

[edit | edit source]
  • In real life, potatoes contain toxins called glycoalkaloids, usually in negligible amounts. Minecraft's poisonous potatoes visually resemble potatoes with excessive sprouting, which have higher concentrations of glycoalkaloids.
  • Poisonous potatoes not having a purpose is intentional, and is one of Minecraft's design rules.[2]
