Oak leaves are biome-colored leaves that form the canopy of oak trees and jungle bushes, and can drop apples.
Obtaining
[edit | edit source]Breaking
[edit | edit source]Hoes are the default tools for breaking leaves, but leaves can be obtained only with shears or tools enchanted with Silk Touch.

Without shears, oak leaves can drop 1 oak sapling, 1—2 sticks, and 1 apple. Fortune increases the chances.

Natural generation
[edit | edit source]Oak leaves form the canopy of any standing oak tree and jungle bush. Oak trees with oak leaves are also generated in some parts of plains villages, trial chambers, and abandoned camps.
Post-generation
[edit | edit source]Leaves generate as part of oak trees grown from oak saplings.
Usage
[edit | edit source]Oak leaves that decay have the same drop chances as when broken by a player, yielding 1 oak sapling 5% (1⁄20) of the time, 1-2 sticks 2% of the time, and 1 apple 0.5% (1⁄200) of the time. It is extremely rare but possible for a single leaf to drop a sapling, two sticks and an apple at the same time. Leaves that are burned do not drop saplings or apples.
Smelting ingredient
[edit | edit source]| Name | Ingredients | Smelting recipe |
|---|---|---|
| Leaf Litter | Oak Leaves + Any fuel |
Redstone component
[edit | edit source]The state of a leaves block—including a player-placed block—changes after 1 game tick (half a redstone tick) when the distance to the nearest log or wood block changes, up to 6 blocks of leaves away. Observers facing away from the leaves detect this change and transmit a redstone signal in the same game tick, making leaves useful for redstone signal transmission.
Piston interactivity
[edit | edit source]Leaves are destroyed when pushed by pistons. They do not stick to sticky pistons, slime blocks, or honey blocks.
Composting
[edit | edit source]Oak leaves have a 30% chance of increasing the compost level in a composter by 1. A stack of leaves yields an average of 3.05 bone meal.
Color
[edit | edit source]The specific instructions are:
- Biome colors with Bedrock Edition models
- Biome colors with non-fancy leaves on both editions
Oak leaves have unique colors based on the biome they are placed in.
In the inventory, oak leaves are colored
#48b518 in Java Edition, or use pre-colored textures in Bedrock Edition.
Biome colors
[edit | edit source]These values are generated by the biome dyeing algorithm. In Bedrock Edition, biome colors also appear on maps.
Snowy leaves
[edit | edit source]
In any biome with a base temperature of below 0.15, oak leaves gradually fade to white once snowfall begins, giving them a frosted appearance for the storm's duration. During transition, the white color is blended with the regular color in eight steps. After snowfall ends, leaves gradually fade back to their normal coloration.
This does not affect leaves in biomes with a higher base temperature, even at altitudes that allow snowfall. The change is entirely invisible to the client if the graphics mode is set to Simple, though it still takes place, and leaves are the correct color phase for the time if the option is re-enabled.
Particles
[edit | edit source]Oak leaves have falling leaves particles which are produced underneath the leaf block, where they slowly fall to the ground. They have the same color as the leaves they're falling from, which can change with the biome or during snowfall.[BE only]

Bedrock Edition
[edit | edit source]- Early Pocket Edition had a bug where item forms of leaves would sometimes use the crafting table side texture (untinted) - document this issue and render
- "Far" leaves rendering in Pocket Edition, and if that still exists
- Later pocket edition fast leaves history
- In mid pocket edition alpha (around 2014-15), leaves had a strange texture when completely covered by other leaves or at the edge of render distance - what exactly was this texture?

Issues
[edit | edit source]Issues relating to "Oak Leaves" are maintained on the bug tracker. Issues should be reported and viewed there.
Trivia
[edit | edit source]- Occasionally, leaves grow through other blocks, acting as though they are still connected to the tree. They may also completely replace blocks they try to grow into.
- Some trees seem to occasionally drop apples or saplings without being destroyed due to creation of leaf blocks not supported by logs.
