Mob loot
[edit | edit source]Zombies, husks, zombie villagers[Java Edition only], skeletons, strays, bogged, and parched have a chance to spawn with armor on Normal and Hard difficulty, with a 9.73% chance of it being chainmail armor. If killed by a player, there is an 8.5% chance (9.5% with Looting I, 10.5% with Looting II and 11.5% with Looting III) for the mob to drop the armor they're wearing upon death. The dropped armor has a random durability and retains any enchantments it has.
Trading
[edit | edit source]Chainmail armor can be bought from armorers.

Villager gifts
[edit | edit source]Armorer villagers may give players with the Hero of the Village effect chainmail armor.
Usage
[edit | edit source]Wearing chainmail armor reduces damage taken from most damage types.
Statistics
[edit | edit source]When a full set of chainmail armor is worn, the set provides 12 ( × 6) armor points.
| Type | Armor | Armor toughness | Knockback resistance | Durability | Enchantability |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 12 ( × 6) | 0 () | 0 | N/A | N/A | |
| 2 () | 0 () | 0 | 165 | 12 | |
| 5 () | 0 () | 0 | 240 | 12 | |
| 4 () | 0 () | 0 | 225 | 12 | |
| 1 () | 0 () | 0 | 195 | 12 |
Damage reduction
[edit | edit source]Wearing armor reduces incoming damage according to two values: armor, and armor toughness. Each piece of armor provides a given armor and armor toughness value, and the values from each armor piece are added together when calculating damage reduction.
The strength of incoming damage also determines the damage reduction of worn armor, as armor does not protect in a linear fashion.
| Minimum | 25% | 50% | 75% | Maximum | |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Damage reduction | 9.6% | 19.2% | 28.8% | 38.4% | 48% |
| Incoming damage | 19.2HP × 9.6 | 14.4HP × 7.2 | 9.6HP × 4.8 | 4.8HP × 2.4 | 0HP |
Equipping
[edit | edit source]Players can equip chainmail armor by placing it in their inventory, using the item, or via a dispenser. When equipped, the armor is rendered. Some other humanoids can also render the armor, pick it up, equip it, and be equipped via a dispenser; see the table below.
| Entity | Render the armor | Dispenser | Can pick up and equip |
|---|---|---|---|

In Java Edition, with the exception of the allay, dolphin, fox, panda, and sulfur cube, all other mobs with the CanPickUpLoot nbt tag true (1b) can equip armor from a dispenser (except happy ghast), and pick up and equip if are without armor or have worse armor (except ender dragon). All living entities can equip armor using commands, like /item or /data.
