Planks are common blocks used as building blocks and in crafting recipes. They are usually one of the first things that a player crafts in Survival mode. There are currently 13 variants of planks, which can be differentiated into three categories: Overworld planks made from tree logs, bamboo planks made from blocks of bamboo, and nonflammable Nether planks made from huge fungus stems.

Obtaining

Breaking

Planks can be broken by hand, but using an axe speeds up the process.

Natural generation

Oak planks generate as part of:

• Mineshafts, where they are used as beams supported by oak fences and as a platform where air is beneath.
• Plains villages, where they are used for various structures including walls, roofs, and floors of many buildings, as well as paths over water.
• Strongholds, where they are used for floors and pillars in the library and storage rooms.
• Woodland mansions
• Shipwrecks
• Abandoned camps

Spruce planks generate as part of:

• Swamp huts, where they are used as a primary building material.
• Taiga and snowy villages, as a part of several buildings, with additional snowy taiga villages in Bedrock Edition.
• Cold Ocean Ruins
• Shipwrecks
• Abandoned camps in swamps

Birch planks generate as part of:

• Woodland mansions
• Shipwrecks
• Pillager outposts

Jungle planks generate as part of shipwrecks.

Acacia planks generate as part of:

• Savanna villages
• Shipwrecks‌^{[BE only]}

Dark oak planks generate as part of:

• Mineshafts generated in badlands biomes
• Woodland mansions
• Cold Ocean Ruins
• Shipwrecks
• Pillager outposts
• Ancient cities

Mangrove, pale oak, crimson, warped, cherry, poplar, and bamboo planks do not generate naturally.

Usage

Planks can be used to build structures, craft ingredients, or as fuel for smelting. Crimson planks and warped planks, however, cannot be used as fuel.

Crafting ingredient

Planks are used in many different crafting recipes. Stairs, slabs, fences, fence gates, doors, trapdoors, pressure plates, buttons, signs, and boats must be crafted from planks of the same type, and the crafted result depends on the type used. For other products, planks of different types can be mixed freely and the wood types in the product is indeterminate. Crimson and warped planks cannot be used to make boats.

• Wooden Sword
• Wooden Pickaxe
• Wooden Axe
• Wooden Shovel

Data history

Java Edition

Java Edition
1.8 14w06a All six types of planks now use the newly-implemented model json file models/block/cube.json; previously the geometry was defined in the game code itself.
14w10a Planks with numerical metadata variants 6 through 15, which are inaccessible through normal gameplay, now have no model rather than appearing identical to oak planks.
14w25a Planks are now defined via block states rather than by numerical metadata. Prior to this version, the numerical metadata variants of planks were as follows: DV Description 0 Oak Planks 1 Spruce Planks 2 Birch Planks 3 Jungle Planks 4 Acacia Planks 5 Dark Oak Planks 6-15 Inaccessible "boring" variants of planks
14w26a Planks with metadata values 6 through 15 have been completely removed from the game.
1.13 17w47a The different block states for the planks ID have now been split up into their own IDs.
Prior to The Flattening, this block's numeral ID was 5.

Trivia

• To craft each recipe once, a player would need 152 planks, including 10 for the recipes that require sticks, and 6 for wooden slabs. To craft all the other 10 wood variants of all recipes, the player would need an extra 384 planks, plus another 36 planks for the 72 sticks needed to make the fence, fence gate, and sign variants, adding up to a total of 572 planks.
• Because the 13 variants of wooden planks can be used interchangeably in many recipes, there are 28561 ways of crafting a crafting table, 4.8 million ways of crafting a shield, 816 million ways of crafting a chest, jukebox, or note block, and 10.6 billion ways of crafting a chiseled bookshelf.
