A Bundle of Reeds

Professor Mike Sperlinger is co-editor, with Rana Issa, of a new book being published in October called A Bundle of Reeds: Contemporary Art after the ‘Tigris’, which will be launched with a free public event at the Norwegian National Library.

      <nl:extra4>BOKLANSERING</nl:extra4>
      <nl:extra5>
In 1977 the Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl led an expedition called the Tigris to build and sail an ancient style of reed vessel down the Tigris river in Iraq and out across the Indian Ocean. Fifty years on, one of the original Tigris crew members, an Iraqi artist called Rashad Selim, has returned to Iraq’s waterways and developed his own initiative, Safina Projects, to revive the boat-building traditions of Iraq, devastated by numerous wars since the time of the original expedition.

A Bundle of Reeds takes the coordinates of the Tigris expedition and Selim’s subsequent work as a matrix to explore changing conceptions of art, collectivity and technology. It brings together a wide range of artists and thinkers who are developing new frameworks for understanding the region traversed by the Tigris river, from Turkey and Iraq to the Arabian Sea.

For the launch event, Rashad Selim will visit Norway for the first time and – together with his partner in Safina Projects, Hannah Lewis – he will present the project Ark Re-Imagined (2015-present): a community-based project drawing on the metaphor of the Mesopotamian ark, which has developed a network of local boat clubs, a maritime museum in Basra, and an exhibition for the 2021 Venice Architecture Biennial, amongst its many outcomes.

After the talk, Selim and Lewis will be joined in conversation by Rana Issa and Mike Sperlinger. The editing of the book is part of Mike Sperlinger’s artistic development work (KUF) at Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KHiO).

The event is organised by the Office for Contemporary Art Norway (www.oca.no), the publisher of A Bundle of Reeds.
This event will take place in English.
Free entry.
]]</nl:extra5>

      <nl:extra4>PERFORMANCE</nl:extra4>
      <nl:extra5>

Folkemord i Gaza

(Kilder: FN-sambandet, palestinakomiteen.no)

Performancen varer i alt fra 10 til 30 minutter.
Dagens dikt annonseres på stedet.
Kaninen serverer morgenkaffe til de frammøtte.

Hjertelig velkommen.

Poetisk protest

Monica Aasprong, Erling Kittelsen, Priya Bains, Thomas Marco Blatt, Juliane Rui, Silje Linge Haaland, Jorie Graham, Alain Bosquet, D.H. Lawrence, Inger Christensen, Aina Villanger, Tor Ulven, Bernadette Mayer, Raúl Zurita, Espen Klouman Høiner m.fl.

      <nl:extra5>

      <nl:extra4>SEMINAR/KONFERANSE</nl:extra4>
      <nl:extra5>
Monsters, produced by the sleep of reason — sometimes while dreaming. Monsters may be enemies of our emancipation, or its very embodiment. We can imagine them as a transgression of the norm, or as the death throes of fascism, colonialism, sexism, and racism — that murderous past we may not survive before the future arrives.

In recent years, we have come to realise that the world order established after the Second World War has come to an end. We can no longer distinguish between friends and enemies; fascism is on the rise; culture is losing ground, and public institutions — which once guaranteed freedom of expression — are now penalising dissent. Europe has forfeited its claim to moral authority following the genocide in Gaza, while the arms industry and surveillance multiply their profits. We are living through what Gramsci described as an interregnum: the old is dying and the new cannot be born — and monsters appear.

In Norway, we appear to enjoy an exceptional situation when it comes to freedom of expression, and arts funding does not yet depend on political conformity. But that does not exempt us from being aware of what is happening around us; on the contrary, we should feel responsible for changing the course.

Art practices extend beyond the gates of art schools. They emerge and operate within society — repeating, reclaiming, rupturing — reminding us of what we would prefer to forget, and of what we should celebrate, love, and fight for.

'The Sleep of Reason Produces Monsters' serves as the framework for Artistic Research Week 2027, exploring how art and education can act as resistance to the challenges we face today — fascist ideologies, technofeudalism, and ecological crises.

How should we approach this as a research, educational, and artistic community?
]]</nl:extra5>

About the theme

Between the Arts, the 36th annual international conference on Virginia Woolf, invites contributions across the fields of academic and artistic research that emphasizes artistic expressions, and draws on the inspiration of the Bloomsbury Group, Woolf’s circle of artists, writers, critics, and public intellectuals.

Virginia Woolf’s own writings and the Bloomsbury Group community have been long lasting inspirations for those working in the creative fields ranging from artists and writers to designers and performers. At the same time, Woolf and the Bloomsbury group have attracted the keen interest of academics in various disciplines including literary studies, art history, philosophy, film and photography studies. This ability to create collaboration and dialogue across various arts and disciplines is extremely valuable today. Woolf and the Bloomsbury group testify to the force of artistic freedom in modern society and remind us that one of the core values of art is to be part of an open dialogue.

Between the Arts celebrates community, collaboration, inspiration and the collective work that lies behind any artistic or academic endeavor. This conference invites those participating to share the creativity of thinking together and working with each other while exploring the collective work and cumulative efforts that exist in between, behind and under any work of art.

Between the Arts investigates how the various arts and the senses continually interact with one another. The conference examines their different ways of connecting, viewing, touching, inspiring, and affecting each other as well as critically responding to each other. It
invites papers and works that explore dialogue, rewriting, remediation, critical imitation, and creative responses – all the fascinating “stuff” that goes on between the arts.

About the conference

The Annual International Conference on Virginia Woolf is a leading academic event dedicated to the study and celebration of Virginia Woolf’s life, work, and legacy. Held annually since 1991, the conference brings together scholars, writers, artists, and readers from around the world to engage with Woolf’s work and criticism. Each year, the conference is hosted by a different institution and organized around a unique theme that reflects current scholarly and cultural conversations. The program typically includes keynote lectures, panel discussions, roundtables, performances, workshops, exhibitions, and excursions. In addition to fostering rigorous academic dialogue, the conference encourages creative and interdisciplinary approaches to Woolf’s work, making it a vibrant space for both scholarly exchange and artistic exploration.

All papers to be presented at the conference will undergo a peer-review process.
