Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Group is one of Japan's largest financial groups, focused mainly on trust banking and asset management rather than ordinary retail banking, and operates under the Tokyo-based holding company Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Holdings (三井住友トラスト・ホールディングス) with its principal subsidiary Sumitomo Mitsui Trust Bank (三井住友信託銀行). Despite the similar name, it is separate from Sumitomo Mitsui Banking Corporation (三井住友銀行). The group's core activities centre on trust and fiduciary services (信託業務), asset and pension fund management (資産運用・年金運用), real estate brokerage and investment trusts (不動産仲介・不動産投資信託, REIT), and corporate finance and advisory services (法人金融・アドバイザリー). It was formed through mergers of older Japanese trust banks connected to pre-war financial conglomerates, and today it is a major institutional investor managing significant pension and investment assets, making it one of Japan's most influential financial institutions outside the usual retail megabanks.
