    Empirical risk factors

In the United States, H5N1 was also found in mink in Utah: on 24–25 September 2026 the USDA Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service's National Veterinary Services Laboratories deposited in GenBank H5N1 gene sequences from nine mink samples (strain names A/Mink/UT/26G11429-…/2026), taken from lung and brain tissue with a collection date of 7 August 2026.On 8 October 2026 the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) National Veterinary Services Laboratories confirmed by polymerase chain reaction detection of highly pathogenic avian influenza (HPAI) H5 clade 2.3.4.4b in two dairy cattle herds in Washington state—the first confirmed HPAI detections in livestock in Washington. The herds were tested after clinical signs consistent with avian influenza; APHIS stated they had previously tested negative under the National Milk Testing Strategy and that genetic sequencing results would follow. The Washington State Department of Agriculture reported that the USDA confirmation covered two Yakima County dairy farms identified with the Washington Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory, that the farms were placed under quarantine with enhanced biosecurity, and that pasteurized milk products remained safe with no milk-supply shortage expected. On 15 October 2026 the Yakima Health District, coordinating with the Washington State Department of Health, reported a confirmed avian influenza infection in a Yakima County resident exposed to infected dairy cattle at a Yakima County dairy; the resident had not experienced severe illness or been hospitalized and was isolating at home, while officials stated the risk to the general public remained low and that human-to-human transmission of avian influenza had never been documented in the United States. APHIS noted dairy cattle in 19 states had been infected since the March 2024 outbreak began and said it was working with Washington authorities on further on-farm investigation and epidemiology.
