Best VPN for Streaming in 2026: Tested on 14 Services

Most people pay for more than one streaming service, and none of them works quite the same once you leave home. On a trip, shows vanish from your list, and live channels and whole apps show region errors instead of playing. Each service shows you a catalog based on where it thinks you are, so a VPN fixes it by connecting you through a server back home.

The hard part is finding one VPN that works on all of them, because every service has its own VPN detection. Out of the 40+ VPNs we’ve reviewed, these six unblocked the most services in our tests. The ranking comes first, then what each one unblocked.

Best VPNs for Streaming in 2026

  1. NordVPN: Best VPN for streaming overall, with all 14 services unblocked
  2. Proton VPN: Best for private streaming, with Swiss privacy law and open-source apps
  3. ExpressVPN: Best for simple apps on every screen, from phones to Apple TV
  4. Surfshark: Best for unlimited devices on one subscription
  5. CyberGhost: Best for servers labeled by streaming service
  6. Private Internet Access: Best budget VPN for US services

Streaming Services Each VPN Unblocked

Every VPN faced the same 14 streaming services, with cookies and cache cleared before each session. Six services aren’t in the table. Channel 4, Peacock, and Now TV worked on all six VPNs, and PIA was the only one that couldn’t unblock HBO Max. Proton VPN couldn’t unblock Pluto TV, which also detected NordVPN now and then. The sixth worked in Surfshark’s app and through the browser extension on NordVPN and ExpressVPN.

Best VPN for Streaming: Detailed List

Every VPN in this ranking is a paid service. Free plans failed too often, and PrivadoVPN and Windscribe, the two that came closest, have their own section.

1. NordVPN: Best VPN for Streaming

Pros

  • Hulu, ITVX, and JioHotstar unblocked
  • Fast US servers
  • No bandwidth caps
  • Smart DNS for TVs and consoles
  • Location spoofing in the Chrome extension
  • Repeatedly audited no-log policy

Cons

  • Occasional detection on Pluto TV and Prime Video
  • Expensive monthly plans

NordVPN unblocked all 14 services we tried, a result only ExpressVPN matched. Pluto TV and Prime Video detected it now and then, and both played on the next attempt. One service detected the desktop app, and the Chrome extension unblocked it with location spoofing enabled, a setting that makes your browser report the VPN server’s location. Its US server tested at 181.50 Mbps on our 190.36 Mbps connection, the fastest US result we recorded.

The average speed loss across UK, US, and Japanese servers was 7.8%, which leaves far more speed than 4K requires. The network covers 152 countries. Smart DNS brings streaming to smart TVs and consoles without a VPN app: you enter a DNS address in the device’s network settings, and streaming services see the location you picked. NordVPN also has a native Apple TV app.

For households spread across several homes, Meshnet is one answer to Netflix’s password-sharing rules. Six independent audits since 2018 back its no-log policy. The Basic plan is under $3.50 a month on a two-year term.

2. Proton VPN: Best Streaming VPN for Privacy

Pros

  • Netflix US, Canada, and Japan unblocked
  • BBC iPlayer and Channel 4 unblocked
  • Swiss privacy law
  • Open-source apps
  • Stealth on every plan
  • Native Apple TV app

Cons

  • Doesn’t unblock Hulu or ITVX
  • No Smart DNS

Proton VPN ranks second for viewers who want privacy alongside the big catalogs. It unblocked 10 of the 14 services, including Netflix in the US, Canada, and Japan on standard servers, BBC iPlayer, Prime Video, Peacock, and JioHotstar. It couldn’t unblock Hulu, Pluto TV, or ITVX, so if those are your main services, choose NordVPN instead.

Its average speed loss was 10.2%, and VPN Accelerator, which improves speed on long-distance connections, is enabled by default and made its US server 4.9% faster. Switzerland belongs to no intelligence-sharing pact, and Proton VPN publishes the source code of every app, so outside experts can check what it does. Securitum audits its no-log policy every year, and the network covers 149 countries.

Stealth disguises the connection as ordinary web traffic on networks that block VPNs, like school or office Wi-Fi. There’s an Apple TV app, but no Smart DNS for Samsung and LG TVs, so on those sets, you’d have to install Proton VPN on your router. On a two-year term, the VPN Plus plan costs under $3 a month and covers 10 devices.

3. ExpressVPN: Best for Simple Apps on Every Screen

Pros

  • Hulu and JioHotstar unblocked
  • Fast Japanese server
  • Native Apple TV app
  • WebRTC protection in the extension
  • MediaStreamer for consoles
  • High device limit

Cons

  • Few advanced features
  • High renewal price

ExpressVPN also unblocked all 14 services, with the same 7.8% average speed loss as NordVPN. Its Japanese server tested at 163.94 Mbps, the best Japan result we recorded, so Netflix Japan streamed as smoothly as Netflix US. ITVX and Prime Video detected it on some attempts, and like NordVPN, it required the browser extension for one service. The apps are simple to set up on every device, and the network covers 113 countries.

MediaStreamer, ExpressVPN’s Smart DNS, covers game consoles and smart TVs without VPN app support. That’s how a PlayStation connects through a VPN, and ExpressVPN also has a native tvOS app. The extensions add protection against WebRTC leaks, a browser feature that can reveal your IP address, but there’s no multi-hop and no malware filtering.

Its no-log policy is independently audited, and the Basic plan costs under $3 a month on a 28-month term. It renews at a much higher price, though, so note the renewal date when you subscribe. The ExpressVPN review has the rest.

4. Surfshark: Best Streaming VPN for Unlimited Devices

Pros

  • Hulu and JioHotstar unblocked
  • Fast UK server
  • No device limit
  • Camouflage Mode obfuscation
  • CleanWeb ad filtering

Cons

  • Doesn’t unblock ITVX
  • No Smart DNS
  • Slow to connect at times

Surfshark unblocked 13 of the 14 services, including Hulu and JioHotstar, and it required no browser extension for any of them. ITVX was its only failure. Its UK server tested at 186.96 Mbps, the best UK result we recorded, and the average speed loss was 9.6%. One subscription covers every screen in a home, with no device limit, so the phones, tablets, laptops, and TVs of a whole family fit on one plan.

Camouflage Mode disguises VPN traffic on restrictive networks, CleanWeb strips ads from streaming sites, and Deloitte audited the no-log policy in 2023 and 2025. Its Android app unblocked the same services. Smart DNS is absent, so a Samsung or LG TV requires a router setup. Connections sometimes took a while to establish, so wait a few seconds before you try again.

On a 27-month term, the Starter plan costs about $2.50 a month, and Surfshark’s One plan adds antivirus for a little more.

5. CyberGhost: Best for Servers Labeled by Streaming Service

Cyberghost The Cw

Pros

  • ITVX unblocked on its UK streaming server
  • Smart DNS in several countries
  • NoSpy servers it owns
  • Quarterly transparency reports
  • 24-hour desktop trial

Cons

  • Doesn’t unblock Netflix Japan
  • Low device limit
  • No obfuscation

Picking a server takes no guesswork on CyberGhost, because the app labels servers by service: Netflix, BBC, Hulu, ITVX, and others. It unblocked 11 of the 14 services, including ITVX on its dedicated UK server, which Surfshark and Proton VPN couldn’t unblock. It couldn’t unblock Netflix Japan or JioHotstar, and the Japanese failure surprised me, since CyberGhost sells a server for that library.

Its average speed loss was 13.3%, with enough speed left for 4K. CyberGhost also has Smart DNS, and we explain how Smart DNS works here. CyberGhost owns its NoSpy servers, so no outside hosting company has access to them. It has published transparency reports every quarter since 2011 and covers 100 countries. The device limit is seven, which a big household can outgrow.

Nothing disguises the traffic on filtered networks, such as school or office Wi-Fi that blocks VPNs.  CyberGhost also offers a 24-hour free VPN trial on Windows and macOS, an easy way to test it on your own services first.

6. Private Internet Access: Best Budget VPN for US Services

Pros

  • Every US state covered
  • No device limit
  • Low starting price
  • Court-tested no-log policy
  • Dedicated IP add-on

Cons

  • Doesn’t unblock Hulu or Prime Video on desktop
  • Bigger speed loss in Japan
  • Cluttered desktop interface

PIA does American content well and little else. Servers in all 50 states make it a strong choice for regional US services, and it unblocked Netflix US and Canada, Peacock, and BBC iPlayer. It couldn’t unblock Prime Video, Hulu, HBO Max, Netflix Japan, or JioHotstar, leaving 8 of the 14. Its average speed loss was 12.7%, and the Japanese server, at 141.61 Mbps, was its slowest result, though still fast enough for 4K.

NordVPN was faster on every server in our head-to-head, though WireGuard kept playback watchable throughout. The privacy record is strong for a US-based VPN. US courts have demanded its logs and found nothing, and Deloitte has audited the policy since, most recently in 2025. PIA also has Smart DNS, MACE filters ads and trackers, and there’s no cap on connections.

The desktop interface looks years out of date, but the mobile apps are cleaner, so PIA is easier to use on a phone or tablet. At about $2.20 a month on the two-year term, it’s one of the cheapest streaming VPNs we’ve tested, provided you mainly watch US content.

Best Free VPN Services for Streaming

Neither free tier replaces a paid subscription, and they failed on the same services. Watching Netflix with a free VPN is possible; watching much else isn’t. Of the free plans in our free VPN ranking, these two came closest.

PrivadoVPN: Free Streaming on Netflix

Privadovpn Bbc Iplayer
© Gizmodo

Pros

  • Fast free servers
  • Slows down instead of cutting off
  • Torrent clients allowed

Cons

  • Monthly data cap
  • One device only
  • Poor Linux support

PrivadoVPN unblocked 8 of the 14 services, including Netflix US, BBC iPlayer, and Now TV, and playback stayed smooth because the free tier lost only 9.5% of its speed. It couldn’t unblock Hulu, JioHotstar, ITVX, Prime Video, or Netflix Canada. Data is the limit: a 10 GB monthly allowance lasts about five hours of HD, and torrenting draws on the same allowance. Once it’s spent, emergency servers take over at 1 Mbps, fine for email and too slow for video.

Windscribe: Free Streaming VPN for Global Access

Pluto Tv Windscribe
© Gizmodo

Pros

  • No device limit
  • All 3 Netflix libraries unblocked
  • Built-in ad filtering

Cons

  • Cuts off at the data cap
  • Cluttered interface for beginners
  • Lower cap without a confirmed email

Windscribe also unblocked 8 of the 14, including Netflix US, Canada, and Japan, BBC iPlayer, Peacock, and Now TV, at a 10% speed loss. It couldn’t unblock ITVX, Pluto TV, Prime Video, Hulu, or JioHotstar. Its advantage over PrivadoVPN is the device count: there’s no cap, and we connected five devices at once. The data limit is harsher: 10 GB a month with a confirmed email, then the connection closes until the month resets.

Best VPN for Streaming: Selection Process

We weighed four things, all tested on the same 190.36 Mbps connection.

VPN Services unblocked Speed loss (PC) Speed loss (Fire TV Stick) Smart DNS Devices Long-term price
NordVPN 14 of 14 7.8% 3.0% Yes 10 Under $3.50
Proton VPN 10 of 14 10.2% 5.3% No 10 Under $3
ExpressVPN 14 of 14 7.8% 4.6% MediaStreamer 14 Under $3
Surfshark 13 of 14 9.6% 5.8% No Unlimited About $2.50
CyberGhost 11 of 14 13.3% 7.7% Yes 7 About $2.20
PIA 8 of 14 12.7% 7.9% Yes Unlimited About $2.20

Unblocking Record

Unblocking results shaped the ranking together with privacy, which puts Proton VPN second despite its 10 of 14. Our related guides cover live sports, ESPN Select, anime such as Jujutsu Kaisen and My Hero Academia, and Crunchyroll.

Speed at 4K

A 4K stream on Netflix requires about 15 Mbps. We tested each VPN on UK, US, and Japanese servers, and even CyberGhost’s 13.3% speed loss leaves far more than 4K requires on a 190 Mbps connection. The same headroom applies to gaming.

TVs and Streaming Devices

Smart DNS covers Samsung and LG TVs and game consoles without VPN app support, and ExpressVPN calls its version MediaStreamer. On our Fire TV Stick 4K Plus, NordVPN lost only 3.0% of its speed, the smallest drop we recorded on the stick, and every VPN stayed under 8%.

NordVPN, Proton VPN, ExpressVPN, Surfshark, and PIA have native Apple TV apps. A Roku supports no VPN apps, so it requires a router or a connection shared from a computer.

Connections and Price

Surfshark and PIA have no device limit, which helps in large households where every phone, laptop, and TV wants its own connection. Regional services such as Crave in Canada require a server in that country, which all six VPNs offer.

How to Use a VPN for Streaming

Watching SBS outside Australia takes the same five steps as any other streaming service, with NordVPN as the example.

  • Subscribe to a streaming VPN. We recommend NordVPN.
  • Download and install the app on the device you watch on.
  • Open the app and sign in with the account you created.
  • Connect to a server in the country whose catalog you want.
  • Start the stream that wouldn’t play before.

Choosing the wrong country is a common mistake. Tubi and Hulu require an American server, JioHotstar requires an Indian server, and a US server is how we unblocked Pluto TV.

VPN for Streaming Not Working: What to Do

Streaming services blacklist VPN IP addresses constantly, so a connection that worked last week can fail today. These fixes resolved most of our failures:

  • Clear your browser data. Cookies and cached location details give you away even with the VPN connected.
  • Switch servers. Individual IP addresses get blacklisted, and another server in the same country often works immediately.
  • Install the browser extension. When a service detected the desktop app, the extension unblocked it for NordVPN and ExpressVPN, and it comes with either subscription.
  • Use Smart DNS. Copy the DNS address from your account dashboard and enter it in the device’s network settings. It works on TVs where a VPN app isn’t available.
  • Contact support. Live chat can confirm whether the service is supported and name a server that works.

Best VPN for Streaming: Conclusion

Can one VPN unblock every streaming service you pay for? NordVPN came closest. It unblocked all 14 services we tried, kept far more speed than 4K requires, and its Smart DNS and Apple TV app bring the same results to the living room. ExpressVPN matched that result with simpler apps.

If you care about privacy too, Proton VPN unblocked 10, including Netflix US, Canada, and Japan, with Swiss privacy law and open-source apps behind it. Surfshark covers unlimited screens, CyberGhost labels its servers by service, and PIA is the low-cost way to watch US content. Beyond streaming, the same VPNs help unblock websites and apps such as CapCut.

If you mostly watch on a TV, check that your VPN has an app for that device, or Smart DNS, before you subscribe.
