[Windows] Existing chats intermittently show "Couldn't load this ChatGPT conversation" #50000

Description

@oc12121212

What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?

26.928.3736.0

What subscription do you have?

ChatGPT Plus

What platform is your computer?

Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26300.0 x64

What issue are you seeing?

Existing conversations in the Windows desktop app intermittently fail to open with "Couldn't load this ChatGPT conversation" / "Couldn't load conversation" and a "Try again" button.

The affected conversations vary between launches. Sometimes only a few fail; at other times many or nearly all existing chats fail while some still load normally on the same PC and connection. In some cases a conversation briefly flashes its content for a fraction of a second and then returns to the loading error.

Work chats can continue showing a spinning/running indicator while the conversation itself is inaccessible, so I cannot monitor or interact with the running task. "Try again" often does nothing. Some affected chats later recover without any network or system change, then can fail again on a later launch.

The issue recurred repeatedly from the evening of September 30 into October 1, 2026 (EDT). General internet connectivity remained normal. The pattern appears consistent with an intermittent desktop-client/backend conversation retrieval or session-sync failure rather than deleted conversations or a general network outage.

What steps can reproduce the bug?

Feedback ID: no-active-thread-01a0f5e9-0703-7de3-be12-c059d7743948

  1. Open the ChatGPT Windows desktop app and sign in.
  2. Open an existing conversation from the sidebar.
  3. An affected conversation shows "Couldn't load this ChatGPT conversation" / "Couldn't load conversation" with a "Try again" button.
  4. Click "Try again", reopen the conversation, or relaunch the app. The same chat often still fails; sometimes its content flashes briefly and then returns to the error.
  5. Open other existing chats. Some may load normally while others fail, and the affected set can change between app launches.
  6. For an affected Work chat, the running/spinning indicator may remain visible even though the conversation cannot be opened or monitored.
  7. Without changing the network or system, a failed chat may later recover, then fail again on a later launch.

What is the expected behavior?

Existing saved conversations should load reliably in the Windows desktop app. If a transient retrieval error occurs, "Try again" should reload the conversation. Running Work conversations should remain accessible so their progress can be monitored and interacted with.

Additional information

Environment:

  • ChatGPT/Codex Microsoft Store package: 26.928.3736.0
  • Desktop renderer release: 26.928.31416
  • Codex CLI/app-server: 0.159.2
  • Subscription: ChatGPT Plus
  • Windows 11 Home 26H2, build 26300.9550, x64
  • Exact platform string: Microsoft Windows NT 10.0.26300.0 x64
  • Reproduced repeatedly from the evening of September 30 into October 1, 2026 (EDT)

Troubleshooting already performed:

  • Closed and reopened the desktop app, including force-ending/relaunching it
  • Signed out and back in
  • Used "Try again" / refresh repeatedly
  • Tested the web version and a private/incognito browser window
  • Compared behavior across chats and devices
  • Installed the latest available Windows desktop app update
  • Installed Windows updates and restarted Windows, including a full PC restart
  • Confirmed other internet access was working normally

Some conversations that failed on the Windows desktop app were accessible on another device, and some failed desktop conversations later recovered without any local network or system change.
