What version of the Codex App are you using (From “About Codex” dialog)?
Version 26.924.20706
What subscription do you have?
ChatGPT Plus
What platform is your computer?
macOS and Windows
What issue are you seeing?
After a desktop app update on Sep 25th 2026, conversations that belong to ChatGPT Projects now also appear in the main/global Recents list.
This is happening in the current ChatGPT desktop app on both macOS and Windows.
The same account still behaves correctly in:
- ChatGPT iOS
- ChatGPT Classic desktop app
In those clients, Project conversations remain organized under their Projects instead of cluttering the main list of standalone/recent chats.
This appears to be a regression in the newer desktop app rather than an account/data issue.
I use Projects specifically to separate long-running or organized conversations from standalone chats.
My intended workflow is:
- Project chats stay inside their Project
- Recents / Chats and Tasks shows standalone conversations that I have deliberately not placed into a Project
When Project chats also appear in global Recents, this separation is lost and the main chat list becomes heavily cluttered.
Grouping or collapsing Project chats in Recents is not equivalent to the previous behavior.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
- Open the current ChatGPT desktop app on macOS or Windows.
- Open or create a ChatGPT Project.
- Start or continue a normal chat inside that Project.
- Return to the main Recents / Chats and Tasks list.
- Observe that the Project conversation also appears in the global list.
- Open the same account in ChatGPT iOS or ChatGPT Classic.
- Observe that Project chats remain separated under Projects and do not appear in the standalone chat list.
What is the expected behavior?
Chats assigned to a Project should remain contained within that Project and should not appear in the main/global Recents list.
Alternatively, there should be a setting such as:
"Show Project chats in Recents"
that can be disabled.
Actual behavior
Project chats appear in the main/global Recents list in the current macOS and Windows desktop apps.
This makes it substantially harder to find standalone chats and defeats the organizational purpose of Projects for this workflow.
Additional information
The fact that the same account behaves correctly in ChatGPT iOS and ChatGPT Classic suggests this is specific to the newer desktop client/UI.
