Summary
Codex Desktop and Codex CLI both began failing suddenly with 401 Unauthorized after working normally all day. Re-authenticating in both clients does not resolve the issue.
Environment
- Codex CLI:
0.155.1
- Login status:
Logged in using ChatGPT
- Remote Linux server for CLI
- ChatGPT desktop app also affected
- User had been actively authenticated and using Codex successfully before the failure began
Desktop error
unexpected status 401 Unauthorized: Incorrect API key provided: sk-svcac[REDACTED].
url: https://chatgpt.com/backend-api/codex/responses
The error included a Cloudflare ray ID and request ID, but the credential itself is intentionally redacted here.
What has been tried
- Verified CLI version
- Confirmed
codex login status reports Logged in using ChatGPT
- Logged out and back in on Codex CLI
- Logged out and back in on the desktop app
- Same 401 persists in both environments
Why this looks server-side/account-routing related
- Both Desktop and CLI started failing at roughly the same time
- Both had been working normally earlier the same day
- Fresh ChatGPT authentication does not resolve the failure
- The failing endpoint is the ChatGPT Codex backend:
/backend-api/codex/responses
Please investigate whether there is an auth-routing/session issue affecting ChatGPT-authenticated Codex traffic even though the public status page currently shows green.
