What platform is your computer?
Linux 7.2.7-200.fc44.x86_64 x86_64 unknown
What issue are you seeing?
After updating ChatGPT/Codex Desktop on Linux to version 26.924.20706, several Codex Desktop features stopped working at the same time.
Environment:
- Fedora Silverblue 44
- Linux x86_64
- GNOME / Wayland
- ChatGPT Desktop: 26.924.20706
- Bundled Codex app-server: codex-cli 0.158.0-alpha.2
- Git: /usr/bin/git
- Git version: 2.55.0
Problems:
-
Existing Codex project conversations no longer open.
- Clicking any existing conversation shows the loading spinner indefinitely.
- This occurs across multiple unrelated projects/folders.
-
The integrated terminal in Codex Desktop no longer opens.
-
The Git/files changes panel that previously showed changed files and diffs on the right side is no longer available/working.
-
Desktop logs repeatedly report:
"Git is unavailable"
However Git works normally outside the desktop app:
/usr/bin/git
git version 2.55.0
-
The Codex app-server itself starts successfully and authenticates successfully.
-
thread/read requests for affected conversations complete successfully with errorCode=null, but the Desktop UI still remains stuck loading.
-
The logs also contain requests failing with:
"Workspace routing is unavailable"
status=432
The standalone Codex CLI works separately; the problem is specific to the ChatGPT/Codex Desktop integration.
The regression appeared after updating to 26.924.20706.
What steps can reproduce the bug?
Feedback ID: 019fadd1-f6c5-7c23-8e2b-105bd95957d5
What is the expected behavior?
Existing project conversations should load normally within a few seconds.
The integrated terminal should open and create a working shell session.
Git repositories should be detected correctly when /usr/bin/git is installed and functional.
The changed-files / Git diff panel should display repository changes as it did before the update.
A Git/worktree enrichment failure should not block conversation loading or terminal creation.
Additional information
- Install/run ChatGPT Desktop 26.924.20706 on Fedora Silverblue 44.
- Open Codex.
- Open any existing local project.
- Click an existing conversation.
- The conversation remains indefinitely on the loading spinner.
- Try another project/conversation; the same problem occurs.
- Try to open the integrated terminal; it does not open.
- Check the Git changes/diff panel; the previous changed-files view is no longer available/working.
Troubleshooting already performed:
- Fully restarted ChatGPT Desktop.
- Rebooted Fedora.
- Confirmed Git works:
/usr/bin/git
git version 2.55.0
- Confirmed a login shell starts normally in about 0.3 seconds.
- Launched Desktop with a minimal explicit PATH.
- Tested with completely clean XDG config/cache/data/state directories.
- Tested with a completely clean temporary CODEX_HOME.
- The issue still reproduces.
- Desktop app-server initialization succeeds.
- Account authentication succeeds.
- Existing thread/read requests return successfully, but the UI still spins.

This appears to be a regression in Linux Desktop 26.924.20706 rather than a repository, Git, or standalone Codex CLI problem.
Relevant observations from the Desktop logs:
-
Bundled app-server version:
0.158.0-alpha.2
-
App-server initialize handshake:
success
-
Desktop reports:
Git is unavailable
-
Git works normally from the same user session:
/usr/bin/git
git version 2.55.0
-
Git diff capture fails with:
Failed to start turn diff analytics capture
Git is unavailable
-
Some ChatGPT/Desktop requests fail with:
Workspace routing is unavailable
status=432
-
Existing conversation reads can succeed with:
method=thread/read
errorCode=null
despite the UI remaining stuck on the loading spinner.
I also reproduced the issue with a clean temporary XDG profile and a completely clean temporary CODEX_HOME, so it does not appear to be caused by my existing local Codex configuration or plugins.
There are other current Linux reports that appear related, including issues describing:
- previous chats stuck loading on 26.924.20706
- tasks stuck on "Starting your task"
- thread hydration timeouts while app-server remains responsive
- rollback to 26.917.71314 restoring functionality
