Add Copilot usage support from session-state events.jsonl without requiring OpenTelemetry.

The adapter reads cumulative shutdown usage, normalizes model suffixes, and reconciles overlapping OpenTelemetry rows. It suppresses only rows at or before the latest shutdown timestamp, so usage after a resumed session is retained. Focused and unified CLI snapshots cover the production path.

Fixes #1174

Co-authored-by: Joel Tony [email protected]

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • New Features

    • Added support for GitHub Copilot session-state data alongside OpenTelemetry data.
    • Added COPILOT_HOME configuration and broader Copilot file discovery.
    • Added Antigravity and ZCode to supported data sources.
    • Improved date filtering, session reconciliation, request counts, token totals, and cost reporting.
  • Documentation

    • Expanded setup, configuration, troubleshooting, and Copilot guidance.
    • Clarified telemetry paths, reasoning-token handling, pricing, and environment variables.
  • Bug Fixes

    • Improved session deduplication, model-name normalization, and usage totals.

Summary by cubic

The Copilot adapter now reads session-state usage events, so usage is captured without OpenTelemetry file export; previously only local OTel JSONL files were read. OTel totals and costs may drop slightly because reasoning tokens, which are a subset of output tokens in session-state data, are no longer added a second time. Fixes #1174.

Behavior

  • Reads cumulative session.shutdown model metrics from ${COPILOT_HOME:-~/.copilot}/session-state/*/events.jsonl.
  • For date-bounded reports, uses the latest shutdown snapshot visible through --until and subtracts the last snapshot before --since.
  • Suppresses matching OTel rows only at or before the latest session-state shutdown, so resumed sessions stay fully counted.
  • Normalizes -1m and -1m-internal model suffixes for pricing and dedup.
  • Derives uncached input as inputTokens - cacheReadTokens - cacheWriteTokens.
  • Maps session-state requests.count above one to messageCount; each retained OTel usage row counts as one message.
  • Ignores session-state requests.cost; pricing keeps using ccusage's normal token pricing.
  • Counts OTel reasoning tokens in totals; session-state reasoning stays folded into output tokens.

Migration

  • Set COPILOT_HOME when the Copilot data root is relocated; it defaults to ~/.copilot.
  • Existing OTel files and COPILOT_OTEL_FILE_EXPORTER_PATH remain supported.

Written for commit 685f08d. Summary will update on new commits.

Read session.shutdown model metrics from Copilot session-state files alongside OTel, including cache bucket normalization and canonical model identities for pricing and source deduplication. Support COPILOT_HOME, session-aware monthly and session output with snapshots, and documented source discovery while preserving malformed-line handling and OTel fallback behavior.
Keep only the latest session-state shutdown usage for each canonical session/model pair before suppressing matching OTel records. Normalize both Copilot 1m suffix spellings so pricing and source selection share identity.

Replace manually built report snapshots with sanitized fixture-backed focused and unified CLI stdout snapshots, remove the stale terminal test seam, and correct the reasoning-token documentation.

Co-authored-by: Joel Tony <[email protected]>
Keep matching OTel records emitted after the latest cumulative session-state shutdown so resumed sessions are not undercounted. Suppress records at or before the shutdown timestamp and cover both boundaries in the focused loader regression test.

Co-authored-by: Joel Tony <[email protected]>
Document the timestamp boundary for matching OpenTelemetry rows. Rows at or before the latest canonical shutdown are suppressed, while rows emitted after shutdown by a resumed session remain included.

📝 Walkthrough

Walkthrough

The Copilot adapter now reads session-state and OpenTelemetry data, reconciles cumulative usage, normalizes tokens and models, reports request counts and costs, and supports COPILOT_HOME. Tests cover fixtures and CLI snapshots. Documentation describes the updated paths and data-source semantics.

Changes

Copilot usage ingestion and reporting

Layer / File(s) Summary
Discover typed Copilot sources
rust/adapters/copilot/src/paths.rs, rust/adapters/copilot/src/lib.rs
Source discovery resolves COPILOT_HOME, collects session-state and OpenTelemetry files, tags each source, and updates the empty-data message.
Parse Copilot usage entries
rust/adapters/copilot/src/parser.rs, rust/adapters/copilot/tests/fixtures/*
Parsers emit typed entries with normalized model names, request counts, token fields, and source-specific deduplication. Fixtures cover session shutdown and OpenTelemetry records.
Reconcile cumulative session usage
rust/adapters/copilot/src/loader.rs
The loader combines both sources, selects shutdown snapshots by date and model, subtracts pre-range baselines, filters covered OpenTelemetry rows, and calculates totals, costs, and message counts.
Produce reports and document sources
rust/adapters/copilot/src/report.rs, rust/crates/ccusage/tests/copilot_cli.rs, docs/guide/*, rust/adapters/copilot/README.md
Session reports accumulate entries by session. CLI tests snapshot Copilot output. Documentation covers paths, configuration, token handling, troubleshooting, and supported data sources.

Estimated code review effort: 4 (Complex) | ~45 minutes

Merge Risk: 🔵 Low · up to 685f0

The PR adds Copilot session-state usage support, while documentation still contains inconsistent OpenTelemetry discovery guidance and a visible typo that could mislead setup. The change is otherwise mergeable with explicit documentation follow-up.

Explanation

The PR satisfies issue #1174 by discovering session-state event files, parsing shutdown usage, reading request counts and timestamps, normalizing models, merging session-state data with OTel data, and keeping the implementation in the Rust Copilot adapter. The issue identifies AI-credit and API-equivalent modes as independently deferrable work, so their absence does not block compliance.

Reviewed changes

Reviewed the Copilot adapter, session-state and OTel reconciliation, token and model normalization, path discovery, reporting changes, documentation, fixtures, and focused/unified CLI snapshots.

  • Session-state ingestion — discovers session-state/*/events.jsonl and parses cumulative session.shutdown model metrics.
  • Source reconciliation — prefers the latest session-state snapshot per session/model and retains only post-shutdown or unmatched OTel rows.
  • Token and model handling — separates cache buckets, avoids double-counting reasoning tokens, normalizes extended-context model suffixes, and calculates costs from embedded pricing.
  • Reports and coverage — updates Copilot session aggregation and adds focused and unified JSON/table snapshot coverage.

Select cumulative shutdown snapshots as of --until and subtract the preceding snapshot for --since, while keeping resumed OTEL rows and duplicate-event dedupe intact. Include OTEL totals that prove separate reasoning tokens in billed and report totals and map session-state request counts above one to messageCount. Add range, request-count, reasoning, and resumed-session regressions with refreshed Copilot fixtures and snapshots.

Co-authored-by: Joel Tony <[email protected]>
Document recursive discovery under the Copilot OTel directory while retaining the session-state glob and single-file exporter wording. Describe the range-aware cumulative snapshot behavior and the distinction between folded session-state reasoning and separately evidenced OTEL reasoning.

Co-authored-by: Joel Tony <[email protected]>
Document that session-state reports read requests.count for messageCount while ignoring requests.cost. Add focused daily JSON and table snapshots to cover the parser output alongside the existing monthly and session coverage.

Co-authored-by: Joel Tony <[email protected]>
Count each emitted OpenTelemetry usage row as one message while retaining the existing session-state requests.count greater-than-one gate. Keep cumulative range subtraction and post-shutdown filtering unchanged so resumed OTel rows add only usage not covered by the canonical shutdown snapshot.

Reviewed changes

This incremental review covered the commits pushed after the prior Pullfrog review, including ranged session-state reconciliation, recursive OTel documentation, request-count propagation, and the related Copilot fixtures and snapshots.

  • Corrected ranged reconciliation — selected the latest session-state snapshot visible through --until and subtracted the latest earlier snapshot before --since, while retaining resumed OTel rows.
  • Propagated request counts — parsed session-state requests.count and counted retained OTel rows in report message totals.
  • Expanded source documentation — documented recursive OTel discovery and clarified session-state token, reasoning, request-count, and cost behavior.
  • Updated regression coverage — added focused daily CLI snapshots and assertions for ranged reconciliation, request counts, and separate OTel reasoning totals.

ccusage performance comparison

PR SHA: 7bc13384edc4
Base SHA: 562d0ecd28fa

This compares the Rust PR release binary against the configured base package on the same CI runner.

Package runtime diagnostics

Compares the PR package wrapper, the installed native optional dependency binary, and the workspace release binary on the same large fixture. This identifies whether slow package results come from JavaScript wrapper overhead, the published native binary build, or the Rust core itself.

Fixtures: Claude /home/runner/_work/_temp/ccusage-large-fixture (1.01 GiB, 2597 files), Codex /home/runner/_work/_temp/ccusage-large-codex-fixture (1.01 GiB, 2597 files)
All rows run --offline --json, measured by hyperfine with 0 warmups and 1 runs. This isolates wrapper overhead from the installed native optional dependency and the workspace release binary built on the runner.

Command Runtime Input Median Throughput Samples

ccusage performance comparison

PR SHA: a1e0866fde2e
Base SHA: c951e20dbe60

Reviewed changes

This incremental review covered the merge commit after a1e0866f, focusing on the Copilot loader's migration to timestamp-aware pricing.

  • Updated cost API usage — imported calculate_cost_for_usage_at while preserving each usage entry's timestamp, matching ccusage-core and the other timestamp-aware adapters.

azidancorp added a commit to azidancorp/ccusage that referenced this pull request Sep 7, 2026
Upstream through 8841f92: official Antigravity SQLite adapter (ccusage#1677),
ZCode (ccusage#1675) and Grok Build CLI sources, Copilot session-state usage
(ccusage#1676), Codex originator breakdowns and cache-write token accounting
(ccusage#1663, ccusage#1674), date-window file skipping (ccusage#1665), session totals scoped
to the date window (ccusage#1664), OpenCode v2 session usage (ccusage#1668),
timestamp-aware DeepSeek V4 pricing (ccusage#1679), ETag-validated pricing cache
refreshes (ccusage#1672), and numeric-column preservation in narrow tables
(ccusage#1671).

Conflict resolutions per the personal divergence ledger:

- Antigravity: adopt the upstream native adapter wholesale; remove the
personal heuristic adapter and the antigravity-analysis/ provenance
  directory.
- Codex: keep counting copied parent history (replay.rs stays deleted),
keep tier changes applying at the following turn_context, keep the
pre-v0.144.0 fast windows and the 2x fast-multiplier fallback, and keep
the append-aware grouped cache with serde'd parser state. Integrate
upstream cache-write tokens, originator sources, session_meta line
detection, and filter_codex_usage_files date-window skipping. Bump the
group, per-file event, and all-agent row cache discriminators.
- Claude: rewire the cached daily/session summary wrappers onto
  upstream's date-scoped loaders (ccusage#1664).
- OpenCode: keep WAL-signature cache signatures, the summary cache
wrapper, and --no-cost -> Display mapping; take upstream's v2 session
usage loading and split directory loader.
- Pricing: keep the explicit GLM-5.2 rates and 1,000,000-token context
limit (now via put_builtin_entry for both GLM-5.1 and GLM-5.2); take
upstream's DeepSeek V4 scheduled rates and catalog rules.
- Terminal: keep full dates whenever the minimum full-date layout fits
and attached breakdown rows; take upstream's content-aware fallback
minimums and numeric-column floors, adapting the 80-column regression
test to the personal full-date policy.
- Presentation: keep the hidden-by-default Models column and the
  all-agent --with-models opt-in; regenerate zcode/copilot session
snapshots under the wider first-column floor.
- Ledger: audit baseline updated to 8841f92; heuristic Antigravity and
replay suppression recorded as retired divergences.
