What's Wrong?
Since the morning of 2026-09-18 (CEST), every Claude in Chrome tool call targeting Reddit fails with This site is not allowed due to safety restrictions.
Affects navigate, and for a reddit.com tab opened manually also computer (screenshot) and tab context. The same read workflow (navigate + read_page/get_page_text on subreddit threads) worked daily through 2026-09-17 in the same Chrome profile, same extension, same account. Nothing changed on my side between the last successful run and the first failure.
Blocked identically:
Working normally in the same session: github.com, notion.so, reuters.com.
Already tried, no change:
- removed all reddit.com entries from Settings → Permissions → "Your approved sites" (there were three duplicates with no "Last used"), re-visited reddit.com, re-approved
- restarted Chrome
Why this looks like a policy change rather than a config issue: redd.it is a separate domain and is blocked too — a per-site approval problem would not cover it. The Help Center article "Use Claude in Chrome safely" lists only financial, adult and piracy sites; Reddit / "social media" is not mentioned.
Related: #58464, #47244, #92229 (domains blocked despite approval).
What Should Happen?
Either navigation works (the domain is user-approved and not in any documented blocked category), or the error message names the policy/category that blocks the domain so the user can stop debugging their own settings. If Reddit is now intentionally blocked, the Help Center should say so.
Error Messages/Logs
mcp__claude-in-chrome__navigate → This site is not allowed due to safety restrictions.
(same for old.reddit.com, reddit.com, redd.it; screenshot/tab context on a manually opened reddit.com tab fail with the same restriction)
Steps to Reproduce
- Chrome (Windows 11) with the Claude in Chrome extension, site access "On all sites", reddit.com present in Settings → Permissions → "Your approved sites".
- From a claude.ai chat with the Chrome connector enabled, ask Claude to navigate to https://www.reddit.com/r/homelab/
- Observe:
This site is not allowed due to safety restrictions.
- Repeat with https://old.reddit.com/r/homelab/ and https://redd.it/ — same error.
- Ask Claude to navigate to https://www.reuters.com/ or https://github.com/ — works.
- Open https://www.reddit.com manually in the same profile, open the Claude side panel, ask for a screenshot — Claude reports it sees the tab but cannot read it.
Claude Model
Not sure / Multiple models
Is this a regression?
Yes, this worked in a previous version
Last Working Version
Unknown exact version — extension auto-updates. Last successful run: 2026-09-17 ~17:00 CEST, same profile. First failure: 2026-09-18 morning CEST.
Claude Code Version
N/A — issue is in the Claude in Chrome extension used from claude.ai (web), not from the CLI. Extension version: [chrome://extensions → Claude]. Claude 1.0.93

Windows
Terminal/Shell

Additional Information
Help Center reference: "Use Claude in Chrome safely" (support.claude.com) — lists financial, adult and piracy categories only, and asks users to report gaps.
Screenshots of the error and of the approved-sites list available on request.
