About Chicago Rap
The Chicago Rap tag is applied to the regional rap scene located in Chicago, Illinois.
Rap made its way to the city in the late ‘80s, but Chicago rap never made a name itself in the rap game like it did on the West Coast or in the South until the the late '90s. This was due to the rise of choppers like Twista and lyrical, conscious MCs like Common and Lupe Fiasco, as well as the emergence of hip-hop superstar Kanye West.
Throughout the 2010s and 2020s, the rap scene in Chicago has continued to make even more noise thanks to Chief Keef’s influential pioneering of drill music, rising mainstream trap artists such as Lil Durk, Polo G, and G Herbo. Other artists such as Chance The Rapper, Mick Jenkins, Saba, Noname, and Smino have uniquely implemented elements of jazz, neo-soul, and gospel into alternative hip-hop.
