Michael Johnson

Michael Johnson (1944–2017) was an American singer, songwriter, and guitarist whose career spanned over five decades, crossing folk, pop, and country genres. Born on August 8, 1944, in Alamosa, Colorado, and raised in Denver and later Minnesota, Johnson showed an early interest in music, picking up the guitar at age 13. By the time he graduated high school, he was already performing in local coffeehouses.

In 1963, he won a talent contest that earned him a scholarship to Colorado State University, but he left to pursue music full-time, studying classical guitar in Europe, most notably at the Liceu Conservatory in Barcelona under Graciano Tarragó. Upon returning to the U.S., he joined the folk group The Chad Mitchell Trio in 1967, replacing Chad Mitchell himself, and toured extensively, gaining experience in folk performance. After the trio disbanded, he formed a brief duo with John Denver.

Johnson released his debut solo album, There Is a Breeze in 1973, establishing his style of intricate guitar arrangements paired with introspective lyrics. He followed it with For All You Mad Musicians (1975) and Ain’t Dis Da Life (1977), building a reputation as a skilled musician with a devoted folk following.

His mainstream breakthrough came in 1978 with The Michael Johnson Album, featuring the hit single “Bluer Than Blue”, which reached No. 12 on the Billboard Hot 100. This song showcased his smooth tenor voice and pop sensibility, leading to further success with singles like “This Night Won’t Last Forever” (1979) and “You Can Call Me Blue” (1980).

In the mid-1980s, Johnson transitioned into country music, signing with RCA and releasing the album Wings in 1986. The title track and “Give Me Wings” both reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot Country Songs chart. He continued this success with “The Moon Is Still Over Her Shoulder” and other Top Ten country hits, cementing his versatility across genres.

In 1988, he released That’s That, which produced additional country hits including the Top Ten single “That’s That”, showcasing his ability to blend pop melodies with contemporary country production.

Over his career, he released numerous albums, including Dialogue (1979), Home Free (1981), Michael Johnson (1992), Departure (1995), and Moonlit Déjà Vu (2012). His song choices often combined romantic themes with reflections on life and relationships, delivered with technical guitar skill and emotive vocals.

Beyond recording, Johnson was respected as a live performer known for his storytelling, humor, and precise musicianship. He taught guitar workshops and mentored younger artists, emphasizing fingerstyle techniques and lyrical phrasing.

Michael Johnson passed away at his home in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on July 25, 2017, at the age of 72, following a long battle with chronic heart and lung disease — as noted on his official site: mjblue.com.
