Circumstances of the incident and rescue operation
The tragic incident was recorded on the morning of October 23. A distress signal was received by the Romanian Maritime Coordination Center at around 10:00 local time. The vessel was outside the territorial waters of the country, approximately 13 nautical miles (24 km) from the coast. Ukrainian sailors were on board the KHORYV. Immediately after receiving the message, Romanian services began the rescue operation.
As a result of swift actions, nine crew members were rescued. However, one person was found without signs of life, and three more sailors are currently considered missing. The search and rescue efforts are complicated by the difficult weather conditions of the Black Sea.
“The accident of the KHORYV vessel required significant resources from the Romanian Maritime Administration. Specialized vessels and aviation were dispatched to the accident site to survey the area. Despite the rescuers’ efforts, strong winds and rough seas significantly complicate the search for the three missing sailors.”
Further actions and consequences for the crew
Official authorities are actively working to establish the causes of the disaster by interviewing the rescued sailors and gathering necessary evidence for the investigation. Ukrainian diplomatic representatives are already involved in addressing the situation and are cooperating with the Romanian side to assist the victims.
The families of the sailors anxiously await news about the fate of their loved ones, as the chances of rescuing the missing decrease with each passing hour. Such incidents highlight the risks faced by crews of vessels in the Black Sea, especially under the current geopolitical tension in the region.
No official versions of the causes of the accident have been reported yet, and the investigation into the maritime incident is ongoing. The situation remains tense, and search and rescue operations continue.
